Club Fbass (thread 12)

Edmond... he's killing me! Really wonderful playing and soloing on this original composition, with his redwood AC5. Dude's got it. When I listen to him play (and solo especially) I could see him subbing for Tom Kennedy in Weckl's electric band. Somehow, his playing reminds me of Tom's.
I took another listen to that clip. Phew! I really think he should post more it would widen his notoriety.

You guys probably remember the saga of El Mon selling his early 90's neck-through BNF-6. I followed that thread closely and was very surprised to hear in the clip that he posted just how open the sound of that fretless was.

Well, I couldn't quite swing it at the time, but lucky for me, some time later I saw it on The Low End. I had been working out on the Hanewinckel Signature fretless that I got from Xabicho, but I thought the speaking voice of the F was more to my liking, and Brian was willing to do a Hanewinckel+cash deal for the F. I think Brian might actually have never had a Haney in the store before.

So I have had it for a few months now and just started to record it the other day. Here is my first clip.

Hope you guys like it (although it ends rather unceremoniously ha ha). It's just me soloing over couple of major chords. The pre is mainly rolled off, I just pumped up the "tone" knob and added tad of mid to help it pop. It really is shocking to discover just how much bass is actually in there. And that is only the bridge pickup that I am using.

I have had fifteen fretless basses over the last 7 or so years and I sold every single one except for my Veillette (the Hanewinckel, I must say is missed, though). This F is an extremely pleasurable instrument to play.

Here is a pic:

I will try to pop in and respond if there is any interest. A huge shout out to El Mon for manning up and posting an extremely thorough clip of every tone combo a guy could reasonably expect to hear out of any bass. I would not have driven down to Nashville to try it if it weren't for him.

Tidbit===> If you notice, there are no screws in the bridge. It's only glued in. Me scare!!

Cheers.

You got a like and a subscribe from me on YouTube for that clip. I've watched some of your others so I'm surprised I wasn't already subscribed. Anyway,

That's just like Marcel to do that. The Fbass guys are absolutely first class people in addition to being first class craftsmen, which makes me feel even better about spending money with them.

That tone is so delicious, but I have to say the playing really is too.

I'm curious if Dave Hughes will comment.

If you guys haven't bought Dave's discs yet, you really should. It's great music and great bass playing with great tone...

But Dave doesn't play fretless Fbasses on the discs. He's got great tone so it's not like it is a glaring deficiency or anything...

But yours is so nice.

And I'm glad to see a 6er at work as well. I really don't like playing fretless basses that don't have a C string anymore. It really makes a difference for me to play closer to the nut and have those harmonics readily at hand.

By the way, I updated your club membership and it will be reflected in the next new member's list. The list is so long, I like to spare everyone the whole list whenever I can.

BTW, whoever the lucky person who got your old BNF6 should join in the club conversation as well.

Can't imagine a fretless sounding better than that! Nice playing. Now I miss my BNF5. Tx. lol

Kevin....Great tone and thank you for the clip!!!...outstanding!!

Thank you for those kind remarks. I actually like the cut, too, despite some of the slop in there. The thing that really gives me hope for this bass is hearing that throaty sound, the "crunch" on the low notes that must be coming from the tone knob and single-coil sound. I didn't "grow up" with Fender basses so it is only now that I have been coming to an understanding of that clank and crunch and special type of clarity that comes from the vintage tone knob. I thought for sure that I would have to "Thor" the board to get that sound. Frankly, I woudn't mind having the board coated. I would also consider lining it, because I do prefer a lined board.

Tom, thank you. I traded (+a little cash) the walnut F to Jim down at Atlanta Bass Gallery for a Roscoe that didn't work for me as well. I realize now that I was a bit impatient with that Roscoe, and also with a certain MTD redwood fretless 5 that I had. But the upshot of it is that I don't know who got the walnut F.

Now that I study the photos I can see that it is either a 5-piece neck or a 13-piece neck depending on how you count it.

Here are a couple of the F Bass studio shots before El Mon had the pre installed:

Here is a link to a recording that I did a while back with my first BN5. It was a stock instrument with a maple board and ash body. It was recorded direct with a little bit of reverb. I thought that it might make a good "naked" sample of a stock BN5.

Great clip, thanks! That Bach print was moving just subtly enough for it to be hypnotizing with your playing. I think I've just quit smoking. Wait, I've never smoked. Anyway...

Is that a maple fingerboard or ebony?

Here is a link to version of Teen Town that I recently recorded and produced. I can say that I have never got a tone that sounded like the one inside of my head until I started playing Fbass. Thank you to George, Marcel and everybody at the shop for creating my favorite instruments on the planet!!! The melody and solo's are my BN6 direct with reverb added later. The sub bass tone is a using a few MXR pedals (thanks Darryl). Anyways, I figured that this might be appreciated here. I hope that you enjoy!!!!

In case you guys missed it, here is Kevin (Freeby)'s Teen town on his BN6.

I'm glad that you liked it. It was a maple fingerboard? I don't have that bass anymore. I have since replaced it with a 24 fret BN5 with an asian ebony fingerboard.

I want that bass!!!!

Thanks a ton Randyt!

Ok, it's a very nice day outside. I took my BN6 on the patio for a bit of noodling. Then decided to take a picture under the natural light. It resulted in a much better picture.

Here's a demo video of my bass, by Jason Raso for Ultimate Basses (not me.) There was a delay in posting as there were some lighting issues on the video.
