I'd go for it, it's not too often that you connect with an instrument.

Oh and I just grabbed this from BSD last week :hiding:

My first Fbass and am completely floored by this instrument.

Would love a number :D

Thanks guys. Having slept on it, I am remembering the "instant" connection and quality of tone that turned my head as well as others. Nothing else came close. It was one of those experiences where you feel an instant bond, like your hands and the instrument are meant to be together.

What do you think of the "look" of the ramp? Would it be better if it was natural Ash? Sure felt "killer" for fingerstyle work. And solo's on that bass were like racing in a Ferrari. Fast and smooth!

I take a lot of solo's in my Duo and trio gigs. So that alone is compelling.

The ramp looks fine to me, there are other dark elements on the bass, so IMHO it's not out of place and doesn't throw things off aesthetically. And if it aids in playing, then why not keep it?

I think the ramp is a perfect fit with the black hardware... Great look! BTW, I have the Macassar Ebony fingerboard on my F Bass also, and consider it the best of the best! Good score!

I'm considering a ramp myself...it'll probably be plexi and I'm sure they can cut you a new one no problem. On an Fbass, everything is designed to heighten the aesthetics, even George will admit that... that thing is fugly.

Just picked up my 1st F Bass fretless. What we have here is a 1992 F Bass BNF5. I understand now what all the fuss has been about. Hands down the best fretless I have played..I can only imagine what an AC series bass sounds like!

Hey old friends ...Oh My ....a funny thing happened while I was at Bass San Diego today! I was there to check out Bergantino CN212 cabs and the new GK MB Fusion 800. Had a wonderful time with my Nordy VJ5C checking out the cab and comparing amps. Then an F Bass BN5 with Maccassar Ebony FB caught my eye. Plugged it in.

OH My GOD!! got the attention of my talkbass friend Capt Wally who was there lending a second set of ears. We both felt the tone of the F Bass KILLED everything. I played and executed better on this bass. It had a ramp between PU's and that was my first time playing with a Ramp. LOVED it! ..

Soooo... I put $$ on it! They didn't have an Ash/Maple BN5 to compare, but this bass had punch, growl, KILLER/amazing slap tone, Burpy Jaco growl from the Bridge PU and it played like a dream! Should I hold out for Ash/Maple or finish and follow through in bringing this bass home?

Gary! I suppose this means I have to send you an Fbass strap now! ;)

Yes, finger ramps are wonderful, aren't they? I DEFINITELY prefer them. They allow me to play with much more freedom, whereas without ramps I find myself playing with my right hand over one of the pickups.

As for the ash+maple vs. ash+ebony...

I have an ash and maple BN5 and I love it and will no doubt be buried with it...

But I ADORE ash + ebony. That's what I have on my BN6 (and of course my 2 AC6s).

Ebony is much more rare on BN5s than on BN6s, which makes that bass you are considering cooler in my opinion.

But the ebony is a fantastic fit with the ash body and 60s pickup positions.

I had a Fodera Yin Yang for years with an alder body and maple finger board which I loved for fingerstyle playing, but disliked for slapping -- which is very ironic when you consider that it is Victor Wooten's signature bass. But the slap tone was just too clacky for me.

Not long after I sold my Yin Yang, I noticed Victor Wooten stopped playing his maple board YY and started playing one with an EBONY finger board.

Roger rates finger board wood from brightest to warmest like this:

Maple (brightest)
Ebony
Morado (a.k.a. Pau Ferro)
Madagascar Rosewood
Amazon Rosewood
Brazilian Rosewood (warmest)

In this article, Roger writes that maple is "best for slap." That may be true if you are talking about a 4 string bass with an ash body, and play like Marcus Miller.

Interestingly, Roger also wrote, "EBONY: Not as bright as maple. Most immediate attack and punch of all our fingerboard woods. Note is more fundamental with less overtones. Best for fretless. Pure black ebony from Madagascar is limited. African ebony has some grey mottling but is still very beautiful."

That totally squares with my personal experience. While I LOVED my maple boarded Yin Yang for finger style playing, I could not make myself like its slap tone. Using modern slapping and plucking styles, it was just too clacky -- too percussive and not enough fundamental.

It tried every kind of string I could come into to improve that bass's slap tone and never found a string that helped, so I resigned myself to playing that bass for times when I'm not slapping. The problem was, I pretty much never play a 4 string bass, much less play a 4 string bass I can't slap, so I sold that bass.

Then I saw something interesting.

Victor Wooten, whose main bass was a perfectly fine alder and maple Yin Yang... suddenly started playing a Yin Yang with an EBONY board instead.

As Roger Sadowsky said, ebony has the quickest attack and the most fundamental, so if you are Victor Wooten and can slap and pop 10,000 notes per second, an ebony board is going to let us hear more of the note and less of the clacking than a maple board would. Plus, the brightness of the maple board brings out that sharp fret attack sound.

BTW, 10,000 notes per second was NOT my problem on the Yin Yang or any other bass.

So I can totally see why you would like an ebony board on a BN5.

And of course ebony is very nice for fretless, so when you dial up a Jaco sound, you are going to get a wonderful tone there too.

I say you have a rare find that is probably a great price compared to new, and you shouldn't let it get away.

I have ramps on many of my basses, most of them plexi, but I far prefer the feel of the ebony. They are fast and get faster with finger sweat whereas the plexi ramps tend to get slimy.

And as for the look, I kind of like it. For those not used to ramps and wood pickup covers, it probably looks like the bass has one black soap bar pickup.

Besides, the ebony ramp matches the ebony board.

Here is a link to version of Teen Town that I recently recorded and produced. I can say that I have never got a tone that sounded like the one inside of my head until I started playing Fbass. Thank you to George, Marcel and everybody at the shop for creating my favorite instruments on the planet!!! The melody and solo's are my BN6 direct with reverb added later. The sub bass tone is a using a few MXR pedals (thanks Darryl). Anyways, I figured that this might be appreciated here. I hope that you enjoy!!!!

I did enjoy it! There are so many good players these days, I love it.

Post a photo so I can give you a club number and we can be all official about this.

The only question mark as i contemplate the F Bass on hold is that out felt heavy. I an guessing it might beer a 10lb bass. does that kind of weight on an F Bass bother you guys, or first pity balance so well on a strap that its a non issue?
You've had Fbasses before so you'll remember the ergonomics. It's not just the weight that wears you out, but how you have to fight with it. The balance on the strap is so nice with the BNx basses that it really helps with the weight.

Plus I know someone with a nice, leather Fbass strap that he got from a really great friend. Even though he uses it continually, I know he would be willing to send it back to you so you can enjoy your Fbass properly, as George intended. ;)

Wow! That's one beautiful top! It's even cooler than your TB username!

Thank you! And thank you for the number! #234 - sequential, very cool.

This is my first five string, which I owe to a quick chat with Munjibunga. I asked about the neck profile as compared to Laklands, which I also love, but wanted to get something with 19mm string spacing due to arthritis in my fretting thumb to see if that would help alleviate strain on the joint. He told me the necks were really comfortable so I went for it. But, I did not expect such an incredible instrument overall to go along with - just completely in awe. And, I am happy to say, since I received the bass Friday and have been playing it, I have had zero thumb pain - knock wood.

I'm also considering getting a ramp for this bass, but would hate to cover the top on this beauty with ebony. And after reading your comments above about plexi getting slimy - I'm wondering what my options might be.
