It actually looks way more yellow in real life, kinda similar to the tint used on the Squier Classic Vibes.

Yeah, i was wrong. he didn't said that it hasn't changed. When I asked about it his answer was "Amber-tinted clearcoat lacquer is standard on necks" I agree. I'm not a fan.

Anyone else kinda bummed that Moollon have started adding a vintage tint to their necks? A new one I have has come out suuuuper yellow and looks quite cheesy next to actual vintage instruments. I have an older Moollon that doesn't have the tint and first in perfectly. Hoping enough people share my opinion and we can get Moollon to reverse course

Nothing about any Moollon instrument has ever made me feel bummed, other than the fact I don’t own more. I don’t mind the yellow/amber neck tint at all, in fact I kinda like it. Are we really considering asking YJ to change anything in his production line at this point in time where there’s already a 3-4 year wait?

I say if you’re seriously wanting less yellow on your Moollon neck; contact Andi, order a fabulous brand new Moollon instrument, specifically ask for less yellow tint on the neck, and then PAY for it. Money talks. Communicate what you want with your wallet, because YJ is not having any trouble selling his product as is.

Well I would have to agree it looks really bad but I am willing to let my money do the talking and take it off your hands for $1000, not a penny more. Prob $900 more than someone else would offer.

Interesting! Is that a P from 1965 or a custom shop? Any pics? It's possible that the neck on mine is just much more amber than usual.

It’s a 1965, but I believe the neck was re-sprayed sometime in the 70s. I don’t have pics handy at the moment, but your Moollon tint looks to be in the same neighborhood as mine (although that can be hard to tell from photos).

Had a more recent build 2020'ish that was considerably more ambered than these two.

While the darker tint isn't my preference, I've owned many, many used instruments over the years that wouldnt have been my color of choice if I was ordering directly. And heck, I even ordered one color (rootbeer sparkle) that I couldnt make peace with even after I ordered it.

All of the above to say, my biggest concern is tone, tone and tone. Playability is pretty far down the list as is body color and neck tint.

However, I don’t think it’s even a concern with Moollon basses. They play as good as they sound! Oh, and as for neck tint, well, let’s just say they also look as good as they sound! Maybe if you’re one of those “gotta sand the neck smooth” kinda guys, you might not enjoy the gloss finish.

Yes, so long as the bass is structurally sound, I can generally tweek it enough to make it work. And by and large, most medium to high end basses aren’t going to see any issues where they can’t be adjusted.

Prefer medium to medium high action and baseball bat size necks. I kind of like basses I have to wrestle with. Not sure why as I don’t have the largest of hands.

For sure. Structurally sound covers a lot of ground, but I see your point. Having also played upright for 50 years, I have a pretty high tolerance for bass necks, radius, string spacing etc. But my needs of late run to short-scale 5 strings. I don’t even want to ask Andi when that Moollon (5-string Mustang rework?) would be available. …4th of Never is my guess .

Those look pretty decent, I think they switched to the much darker lacquer sometime in 2019.

I think that priority list is about the same as mine! Ultimately I'm going to keep the bass because it sounds fantastic, even if the neck tint isn't my preference. I was just surprised to hear Andi say that they switched to the more amber tint due to overwhelming customer demand.

Can’t see getting rid of a great instrument over cosmetics. Unless it’s a nasty-ass green. Then it’s gone.

A Moollon neck is by no means a baseball bat.

I reached out to Andi in mid-May to update my shipping address and he mentioned that August/September 2020 were massive months for orders and YJ was currently working on September 2020 builds and there were about a dozen or so ahead of mine (my confirmation was on 10/20/20).
Hope this gives a little insight.
