On the other end of the spectrum, I saw John Mellencamp once, and he said absolutely nothing between songs until he introduced his band right before the last tune. He could not remember his keyboardist's name, by the way, which was funny and sad but another story.
Ask the audience where the restroom is, then before anyone can answer say "Uh-ohhhh" and start the next song.
And for the love of god don't resort to band member introductions. The only people who care already know, and believe me, nobody else cares.
LMFAO"Welcome to the third annual <location of bar> Nambla awards night"
My old band used to throw pickles and gummy hamburgers at the audience....
If you're playing a bar, probably just keep playing songs with as little break in between as you can.
If people are there to watch you... I recommend checking out some Green Day live videos. Billie Joe Armstrong certainly isn't the greatest singer or guitarist out there, but he definitely knows how to work the crowd.

So we got a gig at a local sports bar coming up playing classic rock, blues, etc. It's a first for at least two of these guys and I'm thinkin' "deer in the headlights" syndrome might be in effect. Looks like it might be up to me to keep some kind of a flow goin' with the crowd. Lookin' for suggestions on some cool things to say other than, "the drunker you get, the better we sound" type stuff.![]()
