Meh. Mention it to me ahead of time so I don't think you're just being an a$$ when you turn up in your preferred clothes.
If that's who you are, then who am I to judge or criticize you?
I honestly don't care what you wear, what your sexuality is, which gender you associate with, or who you're sleeping with (as long as it's legal). So long as you're comfortable and true with who you are, we'll get on just fine. Unless you're just an a$$, or a junkie!
That's it, really. Oh, but BRING IT with the playing. If the music is good, then it'll work whatever people are wearing/thinking/being. We listen to music. Sure there's a visual element too, but if people are hearing good music they will respond regardless of what the band looks like.

Have any of you watched the Twisted Sister documentary on Netflix? This topic is covered quite a bit in there.
I told my band mates I will wear a tux/jacket with slacks and tie at our shows. How they dressed was up to them. If they showed up in a dress I wouldn't care, as long as it looked good

There's a lot of detailed answers on here. I'm just going to say if I can't be myself in a band then it's not the band for me. What's the point of creating artwork if you can't even be who you want to be? Wear what you want to wear. Lux Interior from The Cramps wore high heels and all kinds of stuff on stage and it worked for him.
Do you crossdress normally or just want to do it on stage? I think that would be the defining line for me.

yeah being cool is one thing... being cool and having GREAT LEGS is another!
Generally, musical groups have a uniform of some sort. Been to an orchestra concert recently? My guess is that if the 3rd chair cello got sick of womanhandling that thing and wore a tux instead of a long skirt, nobody'd bat an eyelash. If the principal oboist wore a long skirt instead of his tux, that might attract a tad more attention. If anybody wore a miniskirt, that would be unacceptable.
My take on this is that whatever you do, you have to stay in the uniform style of whatever the band does. If this is a punk band and you show up on stage in a cute little Western skirt and scarf and pointy-toed boots, that's not gonna work.
Being seen as a freak is generally not good for business, no matter the business. Full-on cross-dressing might not be a great plan unless a) your act is fairly edgy anyway or b) you like getting beat up outside biker bars at 2 in the morning. But maybe a more androgynous style of dress plus some jewelry or other accessories. I dunno - is that a reasonable compromise until you get a good read on the landscape?

Alright, so I went to the audition; didn't mention it, not for an audition ya know. Thanks for the tremendous feedback guys.
I am a in a punk-ish band with some country undertones (least what we sound like to me). However, we are in Detroit which is fairly progressive, and we will playing gigs in "fabulous" Ferndale.
I like the idea of fitting it to the gig. Not gonna be glammed out on a coffee shop gig, but if we are doing a harder crowd deep in the city or a crowd in a place like Ferndale that is obviously going to be supportive.
My idea here is that each of the guys in my band are very diferent people, and like KiSS did, we sort of want to create identities in the band that diferent people in the crowd would relate to. The frontman is sort of a mainstream dude. The guitarist has this weird metal vibe. I would like to carve out being the effiminate David Bowie type of character. Then the band has this message of diferent walks of life working together. So it's neatly packaged. (Drummer search is underway).
