This is all very encouraging news. Refusing to build my hopes up, but it sounds more like a legitimate deal than just a random computer malfunction now. It`s somewhat comforting that Amazon has acknowledged the sale by taking it off sale, and messages sent with a prelim ship timeframe. Fingers crossed !!!
What messages? What time-frame? On my order it just says "Shipment 1 of 1: The following item will arrive after December 25, 2010.."
That`s what I meant- the order page is updated. "After Dec 25th" isn`t much info, but I see it as an indicator that they really are expecting a shipment to arrive.
Mine still says

Funny, I don't see any change in my "Open Orders" info, and I think I ordered earlier than some of you with new notifications.

My order was placed November 1. In "Open Orders" I see:

I would guess the statement about arriving after Dec. 25 was automatically generated. They probably ran a script to add this text to open orders with no expected ship date or known ship dates later than Dec. 25. Done as a courtesy to Christmas shoppers no doubt.
In a similar experience, my wife ordered a text book that was out of print from Amazon and after 6 months of "we'll notify you when we have a ship date" she cancelled the order. But I'm hoping for a better result than this!

Well, then this is (dubiously) encouraging, in that I ordered on 22 October and don't see the 25 December thingy, which I would assume means that I'm far enough ahead in line not to get delayed delivery that far off.
Maybe I'm thinking too hard, though.
I think that -- like EMG -- most are the same internals in different case configurations to accommodate different basses.

I saw a change in the item listing on the Amazon site a few minutes ago.
The option for availability directly from Amazon is now gone. Now says:
In Stock.
Ships from and sold by 8th Street Music.
$519.00 + Free Shipping

So, is this good or bad? Well, first off, I'd say it is apparent that "officially" Amazon no longer directly sells this bass, except through one of their partners. This means they have no intention of stocking it or selling it straight from Amazon OR they would at least be taking advance orders. Now, it could be they did locate a small stock of these and they are all now spoken for and will be shipped out after arrival. This would be the best case scenario for us. The worst case? Order Cancellation emails in the very near future. I can't even handicap this one anymore. It's in the hands of the Bass Gods.

It's hard to say, but I'd guess it's a slight indication that Amazon's on the case, which is good.
Dean is currently dumping huge amount of product through virtually every online outlet.
These were sold on Amazon for $140 in the past after long waits, and Amazon is still saying that they'll sell them to us for $140 after long waits, but they're no longer taking orders because they have backordered all the ones Dean (or whoever) committed to provide...sometime, from some mysterious source.
That's my take. It's clear they are more or less on top of this situation as they keep updating stuff, like telling late orderers that they won't be getting the basses prior to 25DEC, and pulling the offer.
Does that mean they can't cancel the whole thing? No, of course not.
My best guess on the source of this stuff is that it's repossessed stock from retailers in default. Larger retailers buy on 90-day credit, and if a retailer is foundering and in arrears, it's a better call to try to get unsold stock back than it is to wait for a bankruptcy, lose the stock and get nothing but a small fraction of what's owed you (collecting from a bankruptcy is really bad news). If they're dragging this stuff back from various places, it would explain the long indefinite waits.
On the other hand, they probably have a pretty clear count of what items they're pulling.

Wish I had seen this one in time. That's a pretty sweet deal. I did however find a pretty good deal on the Dean Edge Q5s, also through Amazon... which works out pretty well since I was in the market for an inexpensive 5-string.
