Yup. Two ABZ 5/3s and an ABZ 6/3. The D-Bird was a one off. I was pretty content, until I went back to the ABZ landing page on the Dingwall site and there's an ABZ 4 just looking so sexy...I'm afraid I'd keep looking at my D-Bird and going "You aren't really what I want". Then I'd end up selling the Bird and ordering an ABZ anyway, and waiting another year and a half! LOL!

To your original query from my perspective. D bird vs ABZ......
I’ve never been a 4 string player. I’ve tried a couple times and can appreciate how easy it is to play the smaller necks but I kind of screw myself up bouncing back and forth so I’ve come to the conclusion that I started on a 5 and I see no reason for myself to go to a 4. That said I’ve been playing the 6 string more and more so to the point that I sometimes now miss that string when jumping to a 5 and think I should just stay with the 6.
Where this has led me is to the mindpath of pick 1 thing and stick with that but..... easy to think, hard to do.
I’ve been thinking of putting my 5 Z for sale recently but I took it to practice last night and it had me seriously questioning WTH I am thinking as it is the easiest, most familiar and comfortable bass I have ever owned which led to the idea maybe I should sell my jazz instead..... funny thing is after practice I came home and picked up the jazz and thought “how the heck can I ever sell this?”
I now kind of wish I never put myself in the situation of having so many killer options.
Switching from a 5 to 6 and back of the same platform is definitely more natural but on another level having the completely alternate style bass (J) open other doors, creatively or otherwise.
I know that doesn’t give you a solid vote one way or the other but I just thought I’d bring to light the 1st world problems I often face with having the multiple options.
If I could take it all back to 20 yrs ago and have been woodshedding on ONE bass I know that would have been the best solution.

I guess part of me finds it interesting and valid that your ordering a selection of the same bass but the A.D.D in me wonders how you could order 4 of almost the same thing +/- a string.
I get that fuzzy feeling every time I play my custom abz too. lol
I dig the Super J! In fact, I can't remember which one of you guys owns it, but that white SJ5XXX with the black blocks and the black hardware is one of the sexiest basses I've ever seen. I'd want a 5er in the SJ-series.Super series is not an option?
There's a method to my madness, my friend. My process is to find a bass that covers all the sonic ground I need, and buy multiples of that one. I keep one in standard and one tuned down a half step. I've also been keeping a bass tuned to whatever other weird tuning we maybe using and I think that drop-D sounds better on a 4-string tuned that way. Since I hate retuning mid-gig, it's easier, and more visually stimulating, to switch basses. So, when I switch basses, my sound doesn't change. I don't need to re-EQ my rig or the sound guy doesn't hafta redo the FOH mix because I'm now playing a bass that sounds nothing like the one I started on. Same pickups, same electronics, same settings, the only thing that changes is the tuning...
This process is really geared for a gigging bassist, and mainly, for me, lol! If you're a session guy or you just play for fun, this probably makes no sense, it might be better to have basses that sound way different.
That's why I want basses that are virtually identical. My current FBasses are damn near identical!
The all-natural one is Northern Ash, the brown fade one is European Flamed Ash-so they're the same, lol! That's my take on it...
Sounds like you could use a Providence Dual Bass Station, or a Radial Four-Play, if you don't already have something like one of those.I dig the Super J! Both of my BN5s are right around 9-9.5 lbs. The balance is spectacular and the 34.5" scale makes for a solid B, the design pushes it further to the right, but it's still very comfortable. The only issue I think some folks may have with F Basses, is the 19mm spacing for everything. I like it, but it's a pretty hefty upcharge to get 18mm or 17mm spacing...
Not sure I actually need one of those. I keep my wireless pack on my belt, and each bass has it's own strap, so it takes 10 seconds to switch basses. If a song has a decent sized guitar intro, we don't even stop. I've learned to switch pretty fast, lol!
That's a comfortable weight range. I feel the same way about my SJ5. It's 9.2 lbs and balances so perfectly and plays almost identical standing as it does sitting with the exception of access to the upper frets (because my body gets in the way). My preference would be 18mm string spacing too, but you get used to it.
That white SJ5XXX is mine, and is easily the best bass I've ever played.
For the Nordstrand or FDV question, the advantage to the FDV is you could try an FDV, FD3, or Ptone interchangeably. That said my Roscoe SKB Signature 3005 has dual coil Noordstands, and has almost as many tonal options as my preferred Dingwalls.

Nice basses! I’d love to play one again. The right one is similar to the 4 string I had
I see where your coming from. I used to keep one bass in separate tuning for a different project.
I also played 3-4 basses at 4 set gigs, 2 standard and 2 dropped tuned basses, 2 5s and 2 4s. Makes sense to me...
I posted a sampler of my ABZ6 with FD3's compared to my SP5 with added FDV bridge pickup earlier in the thread. IMO the FDV pairs perfectly with the P, but I've never heard the P matched with another brand pickup.
