$750 sounds fair and reasonable if the neck is straight.

Depending on what you want this bass for it could be a lot of fun to have. As mentioned. If one was to purchase this guy as a modding bass and through some nordstrands in, perhaps a 2 band glock etc. It could be a lot of fun at a pretty inexpensive entry point. If your looking for what Dingwall basses are all about IMO this isn’t the bass to best fit that description. Modern Dingwall are just more refined. Faster necks more hifi sounds etc. This would be I would have to think a more “traditional” sounding bass that my guess is wont separate it from the masses as the more modern ones do.

Make no mistake, I’m not trying to talk you out of it. It’s rare anyone here would talk someone out of getting a Dingwall :laugh:

A great cost effective place to start with some new strings would be a set of Dingwall nickels. I’m more of a stainless guy myself but the nickels will provide you a great starting point and won’t fade on you as quickly. The paysons(as mentioned) have some fantastic string options also.


Good luck and if this one doesn’t work out for you keep trying. I’m sure there’s a Dingwall out there that will get you hooked!!

My #1 recommendation for modding that V1 Combustion would be the pickups. Everything else works just fine and, along with a fresh set of strings, pickups would be the most significant change you could make.

At the beginning, I believe that the bass was conceived with being a platform to easily MOD from but also be a perfectly useable bass as is.

The pickups were also not the same as what comes shipped on the newer versions today. They were lower output and more traditional sounding. They used to have replacement FD3's (and P-tone option) available in their online store in the square shells. I don't currently see them, but you could always call the shop and see if they could be ordered if you wanted to switch them out.

The necks on the V1 and V2 were also chunkier (back to front) than newer models. I still find it comfortable, but something to consider if that is important to you.

The hardware was also different from what comes on the current models. The new ones have Hipshot tuners and bridge rails, whereas the older ones have no name (but fully functional) hardware.

The one in the photo has an alder body and the fingerboard is sonokilin.

Dude, you are a lifesaver. When I emailed the Dingwall guys, they didn't even tell me the difference in the hardware, neck profile and pickups. They simply told me this "Your bass was shipped January 2010. Alder body, Maple neck, Rosewood fretboard. EMG preamp." They didn't even read through my email properly. Sigh.

I don't mind working with something more traditional but I will email them to ask if they have replacement FD3's anyway. Do you think the hardware is a lot worse? With that said, suddenly 750 sounds too much, especially since it's not even Hipshot hardware. :/

Will Nordstands be comparable to the FD3's found in the earlier models? I definitely am considering modding it but based on what has been shared, a part of me feels like I should just wait for a good deal here for a more updated model.

Any pickups recommendations, aside from Nordstands? I mainly play prog, jazz but I also do session work so a traditional or more versatile sound may not be a bad idea.

If you buy the bass, you could always check and see how you like the hardware and decide later. It works just fine.

I had to look up sonokiling up (fingerboard wood). It's Indian rosewood. All the new models are maple fingerboards. I generally prefer the look of a darker fingerboard.

One thing that I have found extremely useful on all my Dingwall basses and that I only think comes standard on one model now (Super P), is a tone control. Even on active models, they used to have a hybrid treble control, which was a treble boost above the detent and a tone control below the detent. I use it all the time.

Nordstrands pickups and Dingwalls pickups aren't voiced similarly at all.

I've played Combustions with both, and if more "traditional" tones are what you're looking I'd look at either talking to carry about a set in EMG shells or a set of FDV's.

I dont think they would ever make an 810. But if they, did, the component cost would be the same s two 410s so the only difference would be a slight wood cost differential. Two 410s would handle so much easier. I just don’t see the need for that kind of SPL, but yeah, it would be loud and sound at the ear.
