Even after getting used to 18 mm or smaller, it still feels like home whenever I play 19 mm.
I know, right? I rarely GAS over non-Dingwall basses anymore, but every time I pick up a fiver with 19 mm spacing it feels just right to me - regardless of the brand of bass.
So a question. What’s more important to you?
Feel or tone?
Genuine question. For me it’s feel.
So much time can be had in soo many different ways that my first and foremost concern it feel.
I want them both.
If I had to choose, it'd be tone. 18 mm spacing is a minor detail if the bass has great tone. Dingwall obviously nails that. When you are in the groove, doing you thing in the band and you feel your tone and the music, it really doesn't matter.
Now, the opposite? A bass that has 19 mm spacing with bad (YMMV etc) tone? Can't do it. If I'm not feeling the tone, the music won't be there for me, even if it plays well and I feel at home with the string spacing. I won't feel the music.
All in all though, an instrument is more than the sum of all its parts.
Dingwall is home to me. The craftsmanship and the tone makes an amazing whole. The only reason I brought the question of 18 vs 19 mm up is the discussion of custom orders.
The playability, neck profile, fretwork and overall feel of the basses is nothing short of superb. I wouldn't have bought two of them in less than a year if I hadn't instantly fallen in love with them from the first time I picked one up. It's a true love story.
Oh, just put the damn Super P5 down for a while and play the crap out of the AB for crying out loud!!!My first Dingwall was a Super P5, so I'm well aware of this.
I want the AB sound with wide spacing.
I want both as well....BUT. I think good tone can be coaxed from a good instrument, often through the hands and fingers. And if they be feelin' good, the tone got to be good too!!

Is an AB not also an ABHS? Just another species of the same genus! I'm just giving you a hard time. But I think if you played the AB ahem HSI sold it to buy the ABHS...
for about two months, you would be much less annoyed by it.I may add they an SJ (possibly with a preamp) can sound better then some long scale basses.I sold it to buy the ABHS...
I just picked up this beauty...... couldn’t not. It was a too good to be true moment. But damn it sounds great.

I hate to say but I’ve heard..... even a fender.... sound great!!! Lol. Just playing but seriously though. I think in this day and age good tone is easy to be had. Feel however...... I give major props to the guys that can play theee crap out of a squire and make it look like nothing.

And again, it doesn't really annoy me. I'm perfectly content with the bass as it is.The bass is perfectly playable. Sounds and plays amazing. The only reason I brought it up was in the context of a custom order. Picking your ideal specs and all that jazz.

Your P looks almost like a twin to mine. The only difference being mine has the recessed tuner posts and I ended up adding a bridge pickup. It is indeed alder which is not the usual choice for a natural finish, but is still nice. It seems sort-of half way between natural ash and something like a butterscotch/toffee colour.

I inquired about a refinish, but ended up deciding against it as it would have been too expensive for what I wanted and because I liked the natural alder.
I admire one-bass players. I used to be one myself. For 15 years. Then I discovered talkbass. I'm thinking about going back to one bass - well, one fretted bass anyway. I wouldn't sell my fretless. The problem is deciding which one.I sold it to buy the ABHS...

I'm really not a big fan of the natural finishes, yes I know I have two, but that's the used market for ya. The Super J natural has grown on me though. The P might also.
I know a refinish isn't cheap, my bigger issue is that I don't want to deal with shipping it out somewhere. I don't know of any decent places that could do the work within a few hours of here (I'd go to the GTA if I had to) so there is some research to be done.
I asked Dingwall if they could refinish mine to that hawt Metallic Sage they were showing at NAMM and was rejected.

I love natural/transparent finishes
I asked Dingwall if they could refinish mine to that hawt Metallic Sage they were showing at NAMM and was rejected.
Yeah they don’t have time, I got a couple of recommendations from Sheldon but they are all US based so not ideal.
