If it's none of those things, then it's definitely the string. People have installed much heavier gauges on Combustions and I've never seen anyone say they ran out of room to intonate even up to .200" for E0. Unfortunately, sometimes you get a dud string.

On a new set of flats I had an A string like that. Always sharp no matter what. Changed it out, all good

Thanks! Let’s see if I can remember…

-bleached buckeye burl top
-reverse purple burst to natural
-green luminlay side dots, fretboard dots and D logo
-Darkglass preamp
-Hipshot Xtender
-Standard swamp ash body, maple neck, wenge fingerboard, FDV pickups

The edges are just natural. The final result definitely looks a LOT different than I had expected based on the specs I ordered that were the same as basses with the same specs that looked MUCH different (see pic below I based it off of (because I have no imagination apparently) that has much more purple and looks much darker overall). I can’t emphasize enough that I’m still thrilled with the results in any case! :)

As you can see, same top specs (I even reached out to the owner to ensure they were exactly the same as I loved it so much), completely different vibe.

That said, I do wish there was better level of consistency in finishes to help ensure customers receive what they paid a lot of money for and waited years for. Luckily, the Dingwall team has good taste so whatever you get it will look amazing, whatever it ends up looking like. The result just might differ from expectations. After a short adjustment period, I am more than thrilled!

I went with maple/wenge on the neck for my 6 string Z. Best feeling neck I've ever played. I love the Dingwall Wenge/Wenge necks, but the maple just feels so much more "like home" for me.

Oh wow. Did you send that photo in as an example by chance?
One of my big worries is having a finish not come out close to what I want. I know they can't do exact, wood and stain being what they are... my Bloodmoon Z was a little bit "off" from what I wanted, in a similar way to yours, too (edges too "bright" and such). Not enough to care too much, I still love the bass... but this next/final Z I really want the finish to be very close to what I'm photoshopping up.

Otherwise that sounds like a really cool build! I'm leaning towards 3x as well, but I'm not a fan of how much aesthetic real estate the pickups take up haha. I know that's a pretty lame reason to choose a pickup layout, but I get along perfectly fine with my 2x Dingwalls already, so it is a consideration for me.

I did! I literally sent that same pic and said that is what I wanted in a 6-string version. These days, with the waiting list they have, I think you just kinda get what you get.

Oh, dang. Well, add that to the pile of worry for me. I wonder what solutions would be offered if someone weren't so flexible on their finish, and didn't like the end result at all?

Somewhere along the line thou your paint spec IS different. The one you used as a sample has a trans grey(?)burst from purple.

a recap of my story when this happened:
I submitted a drawing with my spec list originally. The final spec did change from what I had hoped. I removed a few “trim” options but the paint and top stayed the same. No custom inlay on 12, no slap pocket, no maple contrast layer but ultimately like this. The yellow represents maple.

Upon compeletion, I received this.

This bass blew me away but it wasn’t what I ordered. I was a bit bummed from the result of the bleaching as I wanted more of the character that was originally in the buckeye top. It was missing toggles, wrong switch, and obviously not really on point with the requested colour scheme.
Freakin amazing thou!!! Damn… really… now I’m having thoughts that don’t make sense.

Anyways, Sheldon’s immediate response was to remake it in short order and so that’s what happened. I am very grateful how he and team responded and how it played out in the end but it was honestly very challenging to even consider the first bass as “not it”.

a new top obviously had to be selected and this bummed me out too but in the end I am incredibly pleased with the bass I have now. I have contemplated more builds since but I don’t know how anything else would give me reason to not want to play this. It would only be gluttony.

a resubmit was sent with this pencil crayon drawing and colour sample photo

Nice. Thats a great way to get into more dangerous spending habits!!! Heheh. Remember though, All pieces of the Signal chain are equally important especially the cab for live sound. You can have all the pro gear you want but if you send your signal out through a crappy cabinet it doesn’t matter.

sooooo, which cab are you gunnin for too?

That's a pretty wild ride. I think I recall that from when it first happened, or maybe while it was still being resolved. I'm really hoping they just nail the color scheme I have so I don't need to go through anything, but at least it sounds like if they SUPER miss, there's possibility of things being remade.

The options are:

GR, the new carbon fiber line. Bergantino HDN? (The newer, lighter line), new lighter Markbass? Oh and almost forgot, Eich XS line.

I was suggested Barefaced, too but I think they look fugly as heck.

Either a single 1x12 for starters or a 2x10. Has to be relatively small and lightweight for me to carry around the city, busses and metro.
