I wouldn’t have any Dingwalls at all if it wasn’t for the import models. Got my NG3 last year and ordered my SP1 before the prices changed. That’s all the Dingwalling I can manage. As a bass enthusiast, I drool over the custom basses, but at those prices it would be disrespectful to my family for a weekend warrior like me to own one.

Yes. I will not pay such money for an Instrument coming from a far east factory. Not even for a Dingwall. I am sorry for Dingwall and I imagine their situation. But those prices are way beyond the red line.

Hey yall,
I recently got myself an used ABZ from 2016! It being my first Dingwall of any kind, I'm completely clueless on how to set intonation on the canadian minimalist (I think it's called, look at the picture) bridge. I searched for some hours to not bother anybody because of my lack of research, but I cant find anything on it. The intonation is in dire need for some readjustment, I think the owner hasn't done it for years. Hope yall can help me. Thanks in advance!

The double cap head screws the string rests on are how you adjust the height.

They are mounted in a block that slides forward or back in the slots. The block is secured by a tiny set screw on top of the block. Loosen the set screw and maybe the string tension, and slide the block. Tune up, and check intonation again. It’s a bit hit or miss, not like a screw operated saddle.

Once you get it, retighten the set screw with light pressure.

A couple things: if your saddle screws are bottomed out, they might actually be lifting the block, or preventing it from sliding. Over tightening the block set screw can cause the block to rise. It just needs a bit of pressure, mostly string tension keeps it in place.

If you are bottoming out the saddle screws before you get the action low enough, the cap screws are at most decent hardware stores.

Always do the truss rod first.

I ordered it last year in August. Since my last SJ took about 1 1/2 years, I’m calculating roughly the same amount of time, but I don’t keep my hopes up haha.

The specs will be similar but not the same.

Swamp ash body (maybe dual density swamp ash, not swamp & northern ash)
P-tone in the neck + SFII x2
Wenge neck & board
Never preamp
Luminlays
Block inlays.

Recently I’ve been going back and forth on which finish I want and whether to go for block or speedo bars.

This SJ has really caught my attention

I agree with you that trans black is a great color.

I bought an SP1 just to have a better feel of the medium scale. Unfortunately, today I have been told that my SP1 did not pass QC, hence I have to wait for the next batch

Hope that’s just a one off. I’ve been buying Dingwalls - Canadian and imports - for 15 years and have never seen a QC issue.

Ya, and then those one-offs are even above Prima's now,too. I'm glad I have my one Prima. I was hoping to someday pick up a 2nd one, but, there's just no way. The Z in progress will be my last, but, it'll also mean I have 6 Canadian Dingwalls here, which is plenty. I'm glad Dingwall is successful enough to charge these for their skills and talents. At some point there has to be an upper limit at what the market will bear, even for innovative instruments like these.

If one were to drop the fancy top, reverse burst finish, wenge neck, ebony fingerboard, preamp, and inlays, you could lower the price by about 3.5k and still get an awesome instrument.

Congrats on the new bass.

By the looks of it it was modified to add the 3rd pick up. Iirc that bass floats away back in this thread.

FWIW that bridge is not the minimalist bridge. That is the standard Canadian made bridge fitted to the AB and super models. It s a fantastic piece of equipment.

The minimalist bridge is a newer bridge design, a bit more basic I believe but only experience is through pics. It is fitted on some combustion options, DRocs and the SP1s.

If I go with an SJ:
5 string, alder body, rossted ash neck, wenge fretboard, 3x fdv pickups, Neve preamp, lumilay dots, not sure of the color yet.

And you are right, I am glad too, that Dingwall’s QC is high.

The neck is very long on the AB1, I prefer wenge for its strenght and stability. Coming from Warwick, I did not adjust my trussrod in 12 years. I Hope my Dingwall Will be as stable.

For the super, I love the tone of your Super J Ivan and the neck is way shorter too.

I can totally appreciate that these are basically collector only, and that something like this commands a premium. Yikes, though. I think earlier in this thread I guessed these would land around $25k, too.
