Here are some shots of my Z3. It is finally taking shape! Man, that walnut top is going to kill when it is finished!
That is going to be a beautiful bass! I look forward to seeing (and hearing?) the final product.
Speaking of Z3s...I was recently reading (for about the ?nth time) your excellent review of the Z3 in BGM Issue #2 and wondered what methodology was used to arrive at the stated pickup placement of 2.5, 3 and 6.5" from saddle. Which saddle is this referring to? Was the measurement taken from the 1st string saddle to the center of the pickups? I am also curious about why the measurements were taken from the bridge side of things, which can fluctuate from bridge saddle to bridge saddle, rather than measuring form the nut or 12th fret? I hope that my questions are not coming across in the wrong way...this just seemed like a good time to ask you. I hope that this is not in bad taste. I can't help but think others might be wondering the same thing. Thanks!
No problem! If your bass is properly intonated, then the bridge saddle is just a valid of a point of reference as the 12th fret.
A quick glance at one will tell you that the lower strings, being the longer ones, will be the ones with the greater measured distance from the bridge. The first part of this post seems to indicate that you already understand. Anyway the 31.5" example would leave the pickup on the bridge on the upper strings and still too close on the lower strings, assuming that the above measurement of 2.5", 3" and 6" are correct.I agree that using a bridge saddle as a reference is valid, but it is also generally inconsistent from string to string... a result of each string's length having to be uniquely compensated for at the saddle. However, on a properly designed bass (such as a Dingwall) the nut or 12th fret will always be placed at the same location relative to the string's scale length. If I read that a pickup is placed 2.5 inches from a bridge saddle, but I do not know which string that saddle belongs to, nor the amount of compensation made on that particular string's saddle, then I really don't accurately understand where that pickup actually lies on that bass. However, if I am told that the distance from the witness point of the nut to the center of a pickup is 31.5 inches on a 34 inch scale length, then I will know exactly where that pickup is located...regardless of how the string's length is compensated for at the saddle.
Look at the above pic of a Z3. You can see that all three pups are pretty much perpendicular to the bridge. On Afterburners that's not the case. Don't sweat it though. Take the neck pickup for example: the bass side is slightly closer to the bridge compared to a harmonic line starting on the treble side of the same pickup. This way it produces a slightly more defined sound down low, and gives warmth to the treble strings. However, that offset is negligibly small. One of the many things that I love about BGM is the attention to detail found in its pages. This attention to detail really allows me to have a greater comprehension and understanding of each piece of gear that is reviewed and tested. Since the precise placement of a magnetic pickup is crucial in determining the harmonic content that is transferred from a bass guitar to an amp, knowing this exact location is an extremely helpful point of reference. Perhaps I am the only one who feels this way? My only desire is to gain some clarity about the Dingwall Z3 review...not to come across as a critic!
