Hey Guys, it's been a while since I saw this get brought up, so I want refresh the topic of strings on Dingwall basses. I've owned a Combustion for some time and have a Pink NG-2 coming this Saturday. Ever since I got my combustion I've been using D'addario strings on the first 4 strings and a Kalium string, gauge .158 on my 5th string for down-tuned material because I just haven't found any other solution. The D'addario super longs are not long enough and taper before the nut on the 37" scale B string. I think the Kalium single heavy gauge strings are just over priced. $15 for the .158 vs less than $11 for a .165 from D'addario.
Do you all know of any other brands that fit into the Dingwall's 37" scale at heavier gauges? The standard set from Dingwall works great for standard tuning, but anything lower requires thicker strings.

We play standard drop A and I've been using the Dingwall stainless for this for years. Recently tried the paysons and really enjoyed them.
Sold the bass I put em on so I didn't get to play around too much but I have another set in Que for the Z3. I can only speak from the perspective of an Ab2 and a Z3 but I think the dingwalls should do er but the payson may just take it up that notch your looking for.

Finally gonna order my ng-2 4 string this week, but I'm tripping over what tuning to have it sent to me in EADG or BEAD.

I want it to be versatile and my take everywhere to jam bass, but I also want to be able to drop it down and learn some of nolly's new material.

Just got word mine is pushed back to October now. I can get one that is blue earlier, but i really prefer the white or black.

Alright guys and gals... I already know what you're going to say, but I wanted to get an opinion here anyway.
I have my two Afterburner 1's. The red (phi) and blue (pi) ones, both 5 strings. Pi has a P-tone in the neck slot... I'd like one for Phi, but I can't find those older shaped P-tones. Anyway.... these both get all of my play time for my bands. Anytime I do recording, they are also my first choice unless I need fretless - then the Bongo gets pulled in.

I also have my Afterburner 1 on order. Last I heard (a couple of months ago), it should be done in late Dec or early Jan. I'm hoping for late Dec, for my birthday :p

I've been mulling over selling my EBMM Sterling 5 HH for about a month now. I love the color of it. I don't play it much at all - only on occasion to twist the knobs a bit and noodle around. I do sometimes use it when teaching, just because it's proven to be a bit easier for students to follow. It's also a damn awesome color.

Today, someone offered a trade - a black NG-2 - for my Sterling.

Normally, I'd pretty much jump at that and call it all good. But, I just don't know. I feel like the Sterling gives me something very different in the rare, off chance I need it. I don't see the NG-2 adding a whole lot in terms of tone or uniqueness to the basses I have. I've honestly been leaning towards not selling my Sterling and keeping it anyway.

I don't feel much sentimental attachment to the Sterling. It's been a great bass that I've played a great amount of gigs with, but beyond that, it's a tool. I'm just not super convinced that trading this tool for another tool (that is similar to tools I already have) is really going to be any kind of good or smart move.

Thoughts or opinions?

(I may have already thought about getting the NG-2 and having it refinished in the Sterling's color. I'm not sure I could convince @Sheldon D. to hook me up with a new headstock logo, though! haha)

Do either of your Afterburners (or the one on the way) have the dual bridge humbucker configuration like the NG-2? As somebody who went from a Sterling (SBMM Ray 35) to an NG-2 the pickup configuration really brings a lot more to the table, at least for me. All the pickup settings are great, but the Nolly setting (series) is tone magic for me! Something to consider.

You're assumption is right though, in this group you'll probably be hard pressed to find somebody who won't recommend going for the Dingwall!

No. The closest I had was a V4 Combustion that I had put the pickups in the dual-bridge config for a couple of weeks. That was with the EMG pre, not the DarkGlass pre though.
My two ABs both have 2-band Glockenklang pres. I'm still debating whether or not to do a Glockenklang or DarkGlass in the new build, too, which the NG-2 could in theory help me choose one over the other.

Your not going to need the ng once it's done, and you might miss the fretless.
I suggest buying the ng to get you an idea of the preamp, then selling it when the new bass shows. Or you could do the trade and trade the ng for a different fret less when the new bass shows. Either way it would be nice to try out the tone capsule.

The Sterling isn't my fretless - that's the Bongo. But, similar idea in either case. It'd be super nice to try out the DG pre, but, I can also just go buy one and drop in either current AB without much effort. Man, this is a tough choice and I'm not even sure why. I think the NG-2 would get sold once the new AB gets in no matter what, so it'd be a pretty silly trade.

I picked up that yellow NG 2 not long ago to do something similar. My best thought is this.....
Try out an NG2 in store if possible, take some time, a couple of times and find out if it is a tool you really need. I found that my ebmm at the time was more important to me then an ng2 but that said I had my ab2 and my sj5 and as curious I was about the dark glass (which I do think is awesome) I didn't need it. The classic Musicman that I had was more valuable to me. That said, I now own neither as my Canadian dingwalls are all I NEED. I may get a chance to buy back my stingray at a lower price then I parted with it for and I may do so but its not a need tool any longer with a Z3 of awesomeness as my primary.

Tough call but you may find the ebmm is just a nice change to have in the inventory. And this is coming from a dingwall enthusiast. I personally still have the intent of trying many other basses, not necessarily owning them but at least trying them.

I love my acoustic bass..... It's a very different tool and it feels great.

I sure would be interested in a dingwall acoustic!!!!! Hint hint Sheldon.
