EBMM StingRay Special Club

I’m curious if there are any finger ramp players out there in the Stingray Special world?

I usually carve ramps from wood, but I just got a new 3D printer and I’ve been experimenting with designing ramps and 3D printing… just scrap PLA for now, I have some carbon fiber and wood filament that I’ll eventually move up to. So far, my experimentation looks promising. I’ll use Neo magnets on the underside to adhere the ramp to the pickup screws and the ramp is very very lightweight so there won’t be an issue of it staying in place.

Fortunately it’s the same design files whether I route wood on CNC or 3D print them. I think the shape of the ramp should also be shaped like a trapezoid and follow the taper of the strings as well as have the radius. I think I’ll experiment with that tomorrow while I’m finishing up the design for this one to print a final version with better material.

I also plan to do one for my BFR, but that’ll be carved on the CNC with regular flamed maple so it matches the top better.

Magnets hold it in place, the prototype is done and functional… it works great, and feels so good to have a ramp on this bass. The string height in the upper frets are not as big of an issue to the feel of the hands with the ramp.

I had to do some light wet sanding on top of to remove extra material so I hit it with a little bit of thin CA to seal it all up.

I made some mods to add a bit more clearance and tapered it to follow the string taper… printing a final version in black with which should have a nicer finish to it as well. If that works out, I’ll move onto some nicer material.

That picture on the bass was from the previous prototype, I thickened up the top just slightly to eliminate that which you can see in the photo of the new one laying on the desk.

I have an NYE gig tomorrow night and I’m kind of excited to see what Galaxy Purple looks like under the lights.

Feelsbadman, i tried a Stingray Special 5s used at a used music store - which was the only way id be able to get my hands on one before committing to purchasing one.... i was hoping to not go in completely blind.

I was mostly interested in the 4 string, but since the 5 was there sure.. I tried it out and the exact same thing happened to me and its a semi-well known thing. I think i made a post here or somewhere else about it, because i loved everything about that bass, but that was a pretty big issue. Everyone either stated they didn't have the issue or it was a bad technique problem.... now, not going to pretend my technique is even good, but ive literally never had that problem on any other bass ive played, and when your spending over 3k+ on a bass, it should be getting out of your way, not you playing to it IMO.

The other thing that experience showed me was that the HH configuration had the Neck Pickup way too close to the neck where i slap. I don't slap often but when i do - im not literally the first inch below the neck so that was something i would have had to adjust for that i wouldnt have to for any other bass.

That said - i bought a 4H SRS and its by far my best sounding and playing bass since it avoids both of those issues.

Switch position 2, 4 and 1 are my favorite (most usable) in that order as I adjust from song to song in the material I’m covering.

So for my 4hr NYE gig, I’m still contemplating… do I play the Moonbeam or the Grape Crush?

It is the same for me. Other than my Rics, every bass I have gets a fresh set of strings and a neck shim as soon as i get it. Makes all my setups so much easier. flat neck, low action without needing bridge cable sized strings.
