Electro-Harmonix Bass Big Muff

got one the other day and i have put the ol'russian into retirement. this pedal is great!
nice clean punch in and out. thats what i hated about my russian pedal was the thump in and out when i used it. (may have been a bad switch) either way this is a great pedal!

the dry 1/4 jack on the side is nice for blending 2 amps if you really need to lug all that around. 1 dirty channel and 1 line channel not affected, so one amp is your bass and the other amp is your bass with the bass big muff affected/on.

the thing i like most about this pedal is that you can use that dry switch on the top and it blends the sound of the pedal and your natural bass (sound) together. so your natural sound is outlined by the bass big muff sound. i love it! you get a really nice blend of both with very lil/or no gain/signal loss. kinda like useing the dry 1/4 out on the side with 2 amps, but its done for you with your one signal line and 1 amp!

after playing with it for quite some time. its no way as aggressive as the russian big muff. but this lil guy sounds real close man! and its smaller than that big box clunker.

i really only use it for endings of songs to fill out. (3 peace band).
but its a really nice pedal for the $.
75 bucks... i was sold when i saw the add in bass player this month.

OK folks, what I had promised.

I received my Bass Big Muff 3 days ago, but had not found the time to try it. Today I finally could.

It took me 5 minutes to find what I had in mind : you know, that Big Muff vibe, with solid lows, and blend capabilities.

Exactly what I expected for.

Great pedal.

More later, I'm still in a hurry.

Unfortunately the lead guitarist of my band is very anti bass effects.

I probably just slip the muff in somewhere we he's not looking!

Now a secoundary question: why is the "big muff" named in such a way?

First there was the Muff Fuzz (now available, doubled, in the Double Muff - but it's lousy for bass so ignore it). Then came the Big Muff. It went through various incarnations: ram's head, pi, etc. Somewhere in there they started making the Big Muff Pi in Russia, and the green and eventually black Russian versions were born (many bass players prefer these to the US BM, but it's a matter of taste).

I think it was 1988 when Mudhoney released an album called "Super Fuzz Big Muff" - it was awesome.

The Big Muffs have always been huge, so the Little Big Muff was born, with a sound somewhere between the current US and Black Russian versions, powerable by 9V, Boss-style supply. It's designed for gtar but is still pretty cool and useable.

The Bass Big Muff is based on the long-discontinued Green Russian (according to ehx). Its tone knob is optimized for bass, and it also introduces 2 modes that have never appeared on a Muff before: Bass Boost and "dry" mode, the latter of which allows you to blend in your dry signal at the desired ratio. It also has a dry output for bi-amping goodness.

So there you have it.

Out of interest, what model russian muff was it? Green?

i just bought my bbm and i'm very happy with it, however I find the sound a lot less aggressive than my lbm. I haven't had a lot of time to play with it (home late and after 22hr can't play anymore, that's the thing with neighbours....). Did anyone else noticed the same thing?

ps: and yes I love the combination of having my lbm for screeching and bleeding and my bbm for something a tad gentler

Anyone get to a/b the BBM in comparison to the Metaphors? Is the Metaphors' distortion on par with the BBM? Is my impression of the Metaphors is that it's distortion + eq + compression correct? What would be the advantage/disadvantage of having this all on the same pedal?
