Yep, he certainly did. Have a listen, there was some funky, and very groovy playing on that album; very different to most of his solo stuff. Listen to the whole album before yee judge.

The first solo in Comfortably Numb. Goose bumps every time with just a few notes and heavy string bends. The outro solo in Comfortably Numb would be my second choice

I think you are right. "Stairway to Heaven" and "Layla" probably started the trend. Then there is "Freebird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. All from the early 70's.

I was thinking about how those songs must have influenced pop music in the mid and late 70's. As well as crossover country/rock. I heard Tanya Tucker's "I'm the Singer, You're the Song" when I was a kid and really like the guitar on that. That's the best country example I can think of but I'm sure there were others.
