FEA fan club!

just got my DE-CL and started playing with it. The warmth definitely adds some overdrive past 12 o'clock. I'm liking the ratio around 10 oclock for some reasonable compression. attack almost at 12. Thresh hold seems a bit sensitive, really dependent on how much is coming in from the bass. it seems best around 2 o'clock right now.

Haven't really dove in hard to the limiter side, though love the idea of using it for some solo boost if need be.

Hopefully later i'll get a chance to load it into my pedal board and a/b it with the empress i currently use.

Anyone else have thoughts on setting up this unit?

Here is one of my favorite setups for the DE-CL with the limiter engaged:

Comp:
Attack- 2:00
Ratio- 9:00
Threshold- Adjust until you hear a slight volume drop
Gain- Adjust until the overall signal level is about the same as bypassed

Limiter:
Attack- 9:00
Threshold- Adjust until the LED just flashes at the beginning of each note
Gain- Set the same as above

The threshold adjustments are a bit tricky because of the large range that they were designed to cover. I am working on a change that will allow the user to adjust the sensitivity of the threshold controls so they will be much easier to set.

Hello Frank,

do you have any estimate time for a Photon Fuzz batch? And for a Opti-FET batch? Thanks for the attention.

We are only concentrating on the compressors for the rest of this year and the first half of next year… I can not give an ETA for the Photon Fuzz. The Dual-Band comps are in process now, then there will be another batch of DE-CL’s, then a batch of Opti-FET’s.

Just played with your settings a bit Frank. Really changed the effect the Warmth has on the overall sound (in a good way).

Hopefully later I'll get to the a/b with the Empress.

Hey Frank, thanks for giving a heads up... I'm already on the list for the fuzz and for Opti-FET.
Greetings.

Frank,
Another question about the de-cl.

When the limiter is activated it works on top of the compressor? Or does it deactivate the compressor side and work solely as limiter?

Regards,

Amren

It’s difficult to explain, but Bongo’s two volume dudes analogy simplifies the operation nicely.

When the limiter is active, both the comp and limiter sidechains are operating with parallel control over the same signal envelope. It has a different feel than compressing a limited signal or limiting a compressed signal.

Frank or Bongo, an chance you could share you favourite dual band compressor/limiter setting? Just as a starting point. I an wondering if I am making the most of this beautiful beast. :)

thanks

Here is a setting that I used with my modern rock cover band:

-High Side-
Bypassed

-XOver Freq-
Approx 100Hz

-Low-Side-
Limiter Switch = ON
Attack = 10:00
Release = 9:00
Threshold = Adjusted to where I could hear a low end volume drop
Gain = Adjusted to balance Low with High

These settings basically turn it into a Low freq limiter, but I still had loads of dynamics and the bottom was very tight.

Also re the two parts of the DECL, it's hard to explain, but basically the limiter changes the shape of the compressor. Like imagine two different people turning just one volume knob, each with their own reactions.

Just to get it straight.

For example i have the limiter on, theshold of the compressor is lower than the one on the limiter.
I play a note :-)...that passes the threshold of the compressor but not the threshold of the limiter. Will it be compressed according the compressor settings?
I play a note that passes the limiter's threshold. I guess it will be limit, but in the transition above the compressor threshold and below the limiters threshold (so at the start and end of the note) will it be compressed according the compressor side?

Thanks Frank for the settings. I will have to play around with how you described using the threshold to the point where it drops and then compensate with the gain.

Really love the cross over curcuit in there. I have been using it so that the high gets my effects and the bass goes straight through, which helps keep some dynamics and punch even when all fuzzed up.

A very happy customer.

With the thresholds set that way. The comp settings are controlling the signal envelope while its threshold is crossed and the limiters threshold is not crossed.

When both thresholds have been crossed the compressor settings are working along with the limiter settings. In turn, the limiter is reducing the envelope at that point to where the compressor is working with an envelope with less energy. The control of the envelope dynamics is a little more complex when both thresholds are crossed, because both sidechains are sharing in the total work load. The distribution of the work performed by the two sidechains varies with settings and input signal.

Thanks Darren! I used a HI-LO setup like yours for awhile, except I used chorus and delay on the HI side with the clean LO.

Hey Frank,

Just got my DE-CL...Is it normal for active basses to trigger compression on this pedal even at the highest threshold settings? If max threshold is 5:00, my bass (Sadowsky) triggers it from as high as 4:00 (sometimes a little past there). I mean...it works fine, but it's SUPER sensitive to adjustments (as mentioned by others in the thread)...this tweak that you are working on...can an existing pedal be sent to you to be upgraded?

Also, do you have a ballpark estimate of what the ratio is at 9:00, 12:00 and 3:00?

That's a good question mine will be here Saturday and I was wondering about the sensitivity issue as well as the ratio settings ?

The threshold has a huge range for low output instruments and for those that want to crush the life out of their signal. The sensitivity trimmer is installed in all DE-CL’s shipped after Sept 10th.

The customers with DE-CL’s that were shipped before Sept 10th have already received information about sending their pedal in for the trimmer if they want it.

I will take some measurements and get back to you with the ratios for those settings.

-Frank

I got my de-cl back with the trimmer installed and I can tell you it totally works. Turning the trimmer down not only makes the thresholds more usable and easier to dial in, but it also increases the "ratio of difference" (forgive my lack of correct terms/knowledge). Meaning that before, I had the comp treshold at like 95% and the limit threshold at like 96%, but now there is like a full 1/4 turn between the two.

The screw in there is really small and a little turn goes a long way

Great! mine shipped on the 12th so it should be in there, i'll check it later.
