FEA fan club!

Found it! Yes, this makes a world of difference with adjustments, much easier to get precise.

I also tried Frank's settings and they're a great starting point to work from, it took quite a bit of fiddling around with the warmth, thresholds and limiter attack to get the slap tone right but I've found a good general purpose setting that sounds good and controlled with fingerstyle and slap, without sounding too squashed...well done Frank!

I only tried 1/4 turn counter-clockwise and that was all I needed. I have yep to try it with my passive P and J basses to see how they interact with it.

Which brings up yet another question: by making it less sensitive, is it reducing the dynamic range of the threshold? and if so, which end of the dynamic range is it reducing?

I know the compressor goes from 1.5:1 to 20:1 and I only wanted light compression with the limiter not too far above that...so I set my ratio a little lower than 9 o'clock. See pic:

The trimmer sets the signal gain for the threshold detectors. The original gain was at 75% of the trim pot setting for high sensitivity. I have been shipping with the trimmer set to 50% for a lower sensitivity. When the sensitivity is reduced, essentially the MIN end of the comp and limiter threshold point is increased making the overall control range smaller.

I will get to those ratio numbers soon for the positions of the control knob.

Yea...I figured as much, having plugged up my passive J-bass to it, the comp threshold couldn't go low enough to get where I wanted it to be.

The trimmer has a range of 20dB, so a little turn makes a huge difference. I suggest that everyone set it with your lowest output instrument. When I set it for my basses I trimmed it so the actives sweet spot was about 2:30 on the comp threshold and the passive bass sweet spot came in around 11:30.

If you want to get the most rotation from the control for high and low output instruments, then set your lowest output instrument up for a sweet spot near the 9:00 position of the comp thresh first.

Here are the DE-CL ratios around the dial… except for the min setting, I rounded to the nearest whole number. I also used 9:30 and 2:30 positions because they are halfway between noon and the min and max positions:

MIN (7:00) = 1.5:1
9:30 = 4:1
12:00 = 6:1
2:30 = 11:1
Max (5:00) = 20:1

I rarely use pedals, but this is the pedal I wish was a part of my amp (actually I take that back; having it in front of my other pedals has made them behave MUCH better)...been with me on all my gigs this weekend and don't see that trend changing...perfect volume control.

I agree I wish this was a part of my amp most on board compressors are horrible I've had two amps with onboard compression a Warwick and a TC Electronics I think FEA Labs should license some technology to the bigger amp makers it would make a huge difference but come to think about it they would probably make some subtle changes to the design and find a way to rip the guys off
