Fender Rumble LT25, Studio 40 & Stage 800

Sad evening yesterday, as my 3-year-old Studio 40 didn’t power up after I’d moved it to a different part of the house after shutting it off.

LCD screen backlight lit up the screen dimly, but no boot sequence took place.

Since it’s out of warranty, opened it up and found this on the power supply board.

For now, probably going to find a Rumble v3 of x wattage while I search for a replacement PS board.

Well, eli, in the meanwhile you should come to the main Rumble Club thread and tell us about it to see if anyone there can help, and to get a free membership.

I'm sorry this happened... I hope it can be repaired easily... Could the fault be caused by some kind of overvoltage resulting from disconnecting the power cable?

Thanks for the kind thought, Ricardol!

I always used the power switch to power up/down, so I don’t think it was a surge.

The crustiness around the resistor appears to have been happening for awhile. I’m fortunate to work with TV engineers who have parts sources that can likely help out with a repair.

The music store I’m hoping to work a trade with is game for it, so there’s that…

That looks SO odd! I'd love to know what that was caused by, or even how it was supposed to look if there wasn't an issue. I've never seen a circuitboard with that kind of a fault before.

I hadn’t seen that before either, and neither had my co-worker engineers.

After I purchased it in July 2020, it’s been in the house, or on the back deck… never traveled any further than that. The West Virginia climate in fairly temperate, and we keep the inside temp pretty constant. It is definitely a head-scratcher!

ETA: I’ve really enjoyed the S40, and am saddened by its failure. I mainly used the presets with drive, dirt, or SVT-style sounds.

The consensus around here at the time (2020) seemed to be that the screen would be the likely point of failure… at least in this case, it wasn’t!

Looking forward to a Rumble v3!

It would be interesting to read what 7ender Customer Service tells you if you sent that pic to them with the explanation that it's just 3 years old. Couldn't hurt.

I started my engineering career designing SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) remotes and masters at Amoco Oil. Oil fields are notoriously difficult places for electronics. You can get some serious ESD, even in clear air. I've seen some similar failures as yours, but more often with capacitors. I learned to design with a 50% tolerance instead of the more common 35%. More expensive, but fewer failures. Voltage spikes and ESD raised holy heck. I'd see a unit returned for service with a "repair or replace" note, open it up and see nothing but the black carbon charred remains of the PCB. Repair? Riiiiiiiiiiiight. :roflmao:

I spoke with a Fender CSR the night it quit, and while he was sympathetic and said if it was 2-y.o. he would have sent a replacement. 3 years and 2 weeks… he understood my disappointment, but was unable to do anything further. I get it… don’t like it.

G-Dog, that’s a good suggestion about sending the pic… like you say: couldn’t hurt!

Yo, Bander! I believe you're thinking of the hardware X FX utility button that "bypasses all effects", for all presets. It does not, however, bypass the selected amp model; be it Bassman, GK, Rumble, whatever. The amp voice you hear is still a modeled tone. That's why I said that "amp model" can be thought of, in the broader sense, as an effect itself. But, in this explanation of the X FX button below, I believe, the term "effects", being turned off, refers only to the pedal-type models. Cab sims? I dunno.

Thanks @G-Dog.
Yeah... went down to the bassment and tried it out. Just like you said.

Hi,

I have an Rumble Studio 40 for bass. I have problems with unwanted distorsion in clean mode, bypass all fx. I tryed new cable, other grounded rooms, guitars but it sounds poopie. Specially when the tones fade out, you hear distorsion poopy sound.

Have anyone had this problem or did i get a broken Rumble? It's warranty is not active.

Regards

Chris in Sweden

My dear bass modeling Rumblers, please welcome our new member #1665 with this query. Does anyone here have any ideas about his distorsion problem?

Say, @Chris5150, I haven't really used the X FX mode much myself. Could it be that the distortion you're hearing is just due to the selected amp model and its settings?

Oh it can absolutely be that issue. Other should have the same problem otherwise i guess. I´ll try and get back here./Chris

Damn! It didn´t work. Changed through all cabinetts and pre amps and ALWAYS the distortion when fading out.
So awful sound. It´s clean at hard hitting but low, the Rumble start to distortion the sound.
I´ll trow it out from balcony soon. And it´s updated...

I just tested bassplaying on my Rumble 40 S and it's awful. Distortion even on pre clean programs. It is a shame i didn't try it earlier.

I just discovered this article, maybe some of you have seen it, with this quote from 7ender CEO Andy Mooney, "a digital amp development that will “blow peoples’ minds”,"!!!

Of course, my mind goes to the further possibilities for bass modeling (which the current products already blow my mind). Can you say, "Super Studio 100?" or "Super Stage 1200?!?". I dunno. Actually, the article mentions their Tone Master tube amp simulators. But, I think the LT25, Studio & Stage are even more amazing!

Well, I wish Fender kept developing new firmware updates for their existing modelling bass amps as they are amazing piece of gear with infinite possibilities. New amps could be added to the palette like the Adam Clayton 50 watts released earlier this year or the classic Acoustic 360 used by Jaco, John Paul Jones and many others… Other firmware improvements like a more flexible overall EQ setting would be welcome... But, after this very successful line of modeling amps, we all wonder what Fender will bring us next… Maybe they will introduce the same amps with even lighter neodymium speakers… There are, of course, much more powerful modelling software packages nowadays where the location of the microphones and their type are user definable variables, for instance. But this adds one more level of complexity that might be beyond the needs of a stage environment.

I think they need to make the bass version of the Fender Mustang micro (headphone amp) and obviously call it the Fender Rumble Micro
