Fonkiest Filter

I've owned a number of envelope filters over the years, and the MF-101 is by far my favourite.

Does it require a bypass option/looper on a modern board? - Yes

Do you have a suggestion for an inexpensive bypass/looper exclusively for this purpose? I ordered a Loop Master a few years ago, but never got the pedal.

As any Moog enthusiast will attest, Moogerfoogers are greater than the sum of their parts. Not only can you route the envelope out to the controls on the face of the unit using the CV I/Os but you can hook them up to other Foogers.

I run a Moog MF-103 phaser I as well on my board. Sometimes I’ll run the envelope out on the 101 to the Rate control on the 103. Filter intensity controlled speed? Supremely musical and thick.

I also have both and I remember the store clerk telling me I could do that with the two pedals. I originally tried, but it didn't seem to work and I gave up. How does it work? I run a regular 1/4-inch from, say, the envelope out into the rate control of the 103? Or do I need some kind of special cable? Do both pedals have to be turned out? Does the chain order matter? Thanks!

Interesting comments about Emma's BOB not being as funky as the Qballs... I tried the Q & passed quick, I guess b/c I was looking for a better Qtron... don't remember honestly.

Emma's BOB v2 has a different value on the sensitivity knob - which makes a difference to my basses. More usable range, maybe? That independent boost can be used to step up for that fonk-blast solo, or I also use it to add a pre-gain stage to one of my other dirts down the line. Emma might not be the wettest/funkiest, but I keep it because it's very consistent & very musical (I think this is the right term. Not too goofy/wild, but just adds enough to enhance the notes - not derail the notes).

I like all this friendly discussion. For my needs and desires, the Spectrum is looking very tempting given it’s size and flexibility.

Let me know if you have any questions. I've been using the C4 for a few months now but primarily for the filter/envelope capabilities.

I'd ignore the fact it's digital - the Fwonkbeta is also digital and sounds analog AF!
in clips I've listened to, the Fwonkbeta sounded analog to my ears. it fooled me. I will say that I've A/B'd the SA Bass Pro Envelope and the Mutron III, and there's no real comparison, imo. when I got my Mutron III I sold my SA. the SA had the overall tone when set to get a Mutron III tone, and it probably would come across well on a recording, but didn't have anywhere near the dynamics and, I hate to use this term, 3-dimensionality. the mutron III really breathes. kind of a like a modeling amp that you think does a good job at modeling a Vox AC-30, until you get the chance to A/B it with a real Voc AC-30.

all that being said, the SA obviously has more a variety of filters and options. the Mutron III is way funkier though.

I love me a good envelope filter

for me the absolute classic and the sound we all have in our head is the original Mutron III. The Microtrons come very close but are a bit cleaner and less stanky.

The one I would call the stankiest is probably the Mr Black Fwonkbeta but it’s so completely uncontrollable and dangerous for your speakers that I ditched it pretty quickly. I also found it impossible to work into an existing pedalboard. Always on, with a limiter after it would work though.

i do love the Joshwah and I find it to be the easiest to incorporate into a live mix. It just works well.

The moog mf-101 is an all time favorite but I would call it more of a space filter than a super funky one. Love love love that always on gain though - maybe one of my favorite preamps ever.

Do you or does anyone else know of any clones of the MF101?

I use the IE Xero Deluxe, 3Leaf Wonderlove v1 and 3Leaf Proton. Waiting for my moment in the classifieds to grab a JoshWah and switch it out with the Proton. Also very interested in the Microtron. I find the Xero to be the most "fonky", but the 3Leaf offerings are easier to manipulate in a live setting. As a result I use the Wonderlove for less intense stuff, the Proton for more, and the Xero as my "trick filter".

I would highly recommend the Source Audio C4/Spectrum.

I've owned a lot of great filters (Moog, Proton, IE Xerograph, JoshWah, a few more) and the C4 is my current favorite.
I like SA stuff, still have a Manta. It seems like there isn’t much point to getting the Spectrum instead of the C4, is there? I get the feeling like the C4 is a superset of the Spectrum. Or is that an incorrect impression on my part?

I vote we wait for @Bo0tsy to tell us what HE uses, then the issue will be settled. I once saw Parliament Funkadelic, must have been 1979, the full Mothership landing, Sir Nose and his entourage, 18" platform shoes, gigantic Flashlight, the guitarist wearing what can only be described as a silver lame' diaper, and Bootsy himself in full regalia with the mirrored Star Bass. I don't think he turned the Mutron off all night. EPIC.

have you tried the micro tron? I have the wonder love. I've never been a fan of it, though. then again, I've also never been a fan of the MXR envelope filter or the Q Tron Plus... Maybe I'm just not a fan of filters, but I absolutely love my MF101. Mind sharing some of the settings you use?

Maybe I'm in a deep depression or just don't care anymore but, this is what I use for envelope filter and looper:

Patch list, page 5 has the envelopes, page 17 has synths:

I also have the Zoom B1xon as well. I am waiting for more updates for the Zoom B1 Four before I commit, maybe another year or so ;)

:D

This was my first one back in the day that I bought. Still, have it! It was the first one I owned. Guitar player friend would let me use his Mu-Tron until I got the MXR.

The humble Bassballs I'll mention. The "distortion" mode sounds fun to me. :)

I don't remember there's a looper in it. Maybe set a long delay for it? :eyebrow:
