Fonkiest Filter

Oh, my bad.
Yep, it's full of stuff that folks may not know about. Patch list of 100 stompboxes and amps:

https://www.zoom-na.com/sites/default/files/products/downloads/pdfs/E_B1on_B1Xon_FX-list_100.pdf

That's why I got it. It was full of stuff that I used but was tiring of draggin' around and to me, it sounded good enough for my audience's enjoyment which it does. As I can make a board or patch of up to five pedals in any order and store up to 100 patches like that.

Matter of fact I was playing at a gig and a fellow bass player came up and told me he liked my sound and wanted to know what pedals I was using. I pointed to my little box on the floor. He actually kinda got mad that I was getting that much sound out of a $50 box.
Good Times :)

I don't use envelope filters any more. I prefer phasers for modulation.

I use both envelope filters and phasers, but if I had a dedicated envelope-controlled phase shifter I don’t think I’d ever turn it off! Who makes one?

Back on topic: yes, the original Mutron III is definitely the King Of Stank. Ibanez AF-9 comes pretty close. Presumably the Maxon equivalent does too, but I can’t confirm.

I’ve got a Pigtronix Envelope Phaser on the way.

Some interesting expression pedal controllability too.

Also the Iron Ether Xerograph is digital. But I have to tell you that I have had my share of envelope filters (DOD 440, DOD FX25B, Electro-harmonix Q-TRON big box, Maxon AF-9, MXR BEF) and the one that stayed is my Source Audio Bass Envelope Filter Pro. It just sounds right and can do many things. I love it. I just don't love its size. That's why I plan to get me a Spectrum because I know how the SA filters sound and this one is an updated and improved version of all that were made up until now. Just check this video from Basstheworld.com.

I too am looking hard at that. My problem is if I give up the envelope pro on my board, which I built pretty much with that the center point, I'm gonna have more room for more pedals! I do also have a bass wah mini on my board as well.

Along with the aforementioned Pigtronix, Subdecay makes phasers that have an envelope option. Also, there's the DigiTech SP-7 which has an envelope option, and the phasers in the Source Audio BEF Pro have an envelope option as well.

The smaller and much simpler Pigtronix Bass Envelope Phaser is the only one I know of that is a pure envelope phaser, with no LFO option:

Dang...you guys got me playing with filters again! I pulled out my old DOD FX25B and used it on a gig last night with great success and then tonight I messed around with it inserted into the loop of my COG T-65 and while the FX25B is great on it's own the T-65 really takes the whole thing to a new level. The ability to perfectly mix a little sub-octave, clean signal, filter, and distorted octave up is amazing! And then the fact the FX25B sits in a loop means the bad bypass tone of that pedal is taken out of the equation. This is a lethal combination!

And there's the Manta too. A couple of other pedals can *kinda* approximate the env/phase sound, like the Apollo2 from SolidGoldFX.

But since you brought up the Piggy Envelope Phaser, it's worth mentioning that the full-sized EP-2 is actually a decent filter pedal. It's not super versatile but it's a snappy and in-your-face kinda sound (especially when you use the staccato setting), and the phaser in that box is ridiculously chewy... it's one of my favourite phasers for bass, actually.

On the downside, unlike the original EP-1, you can't fully stop the phaser's LFO so if that's something that one might be looking for, they might indeed prefer the baby brother Envelope Phaser.

I dunno, I'm maybe an oddball. But I really like the mxr m82. Very versatile and you can get the awesome"dub" tone known and used by Bill Laswell Gets with some DOD filters.

I a/b the dub tone between a vintage fx25 and the mxr and both have the sub shaking tones.

And if there is one effect that is player and bass sensitive it's the filter. A good player can make a bad filter sound good and a bad player will make a good filter sound aweful.

I've tried/ sold a lot of filters over the years. The Iron Ether Xerograph DLX is my go to filter these days. It can get quite synthy sounding with other pedals. I like the small form factor and expression pedal capability. I used to love the EHX Bass micro synth. If it wasn't so temperamental I would have kept it.. It really needs preset functions like the pog2.

I've owned a number of envelope filters over the years, and the MF-101 is by far my favourite.

Do you have a suggestion for an inexpensive bypass/looper exclusively for this purpose? I ordered a Loop Master a few years ago, but never got the pedal.

I also have both and I remember the store clerk telling me I could do that with the two pedals. I originally tried, but it didn't seem to work and I gave up. How does it work? I run a regular 1/4-inch from, say, the envelope out into the rate control of the 103? Or do I need some kind of special cable? Do both pedals have to be turned out? Does the chain order matter? Thanks!

I bought three of these lil guys from Loop Master a few years ago for my rack mounted Moogerfoogers and I remember it taking them a long time to make the order. I ended up emailing them and they got back to me saying they had a huge backlog of orders they were getting through. Not sure if emailing them is what ultimately got me the pedals but have you tried hitting them up?

As far as CV patching goes, if I'm remembering correctly, regular TS cables are fine as long as you aren't using an expression pedal to control one of the CV ins. Then you would need a TRS cable. To play it safe I just ordered a pack of like 6 trs cables off amazon. The good thing about CV is that you're literally sending voltage from one place to another so the quality of the cable doesn't matter as much as if you were running an audio signal to an amp or interface.

And yeah, for an envelope phaser effect with the 101 and 103 you'd want to run the envelope out of the 101 into the rate in on the 103. Or you could send it to the Sweep In and set the phaser to 12 stage mode so then you'd have a six stage phaser doing the phaser thing and the other six stage phaser with a rate controlled by envelope (I want to try that now).

Chain order for CV signals is irrelevant. If you send the LFO from the phaser into the cutoff of the envelope, it will just do that regardless of position in your chain. The pedal sending CV signals does not need to be on. Sometimes I'll send the LFO of the mf-102 Ring Mod into the Sweep In of the 103 for that bi-phasing trick i mentioned earlier and I'll never turn on the 102. As long as it's powered up it's good to send CV signals.

Sorry for the wall of text, I hope that helps you out. And for the record, my vote for Fonkiest Filter will always be the mf-101. Been through various iterations of the Proton, Wonderlove, Chromatron, GR2, Source Audio filters, HAZ Mutron 3, FX25, Q-Tron+, MXR M82, Spatial Delivery, probably a few others I'm forgetting and always end up coming back to the Moog.
