G&L Club Part 7

I loved the 84 SB-2 JJ I had. Never had an issue with lack of fundamental but it certainly was a more middy sounding bass. Part of the reason why is related to pickup placement. When compared to a traditional 60s style jazz, both single coils are scrunched a little closer to the bridge on the old SB-2. Maybe the maple bodies have something to do with it as well but I think pup placement is a major factor. I miss that bass...

My SB-2 has the two soapbars. I really don't know why it is a little light on the fundamental. I can tell you that I've actually had guitarist point it out to me before. It's not a deal breaker for the bass, don't get me wrong. I'm focusing on the negative, but the bass has soooo many positives. It is a bass that has sentimental value, plus it is heavily moded so it's probably not worth much now anyway. Whatever the reason for the fundamental it is just part of this instrument. It could be the wood, the neck soapbar, or heck, maybe it's just unique to this instrument. Who knows. None the less, I do love it so!

One day I will get a L-2000, just not an option now since I blew up one of my rigs on Monday.

Hello! New member, here...

I have a '92 LB100. This photo shows the Bartolini pickup that was in it when I bought it. That didn't last long. There's a Duncan SPB-3 in it now. I love this bass. I'd like to check out one of the reissues. I'd like to end up with an old L-1000 sometime. My friend has an odd, early one that has a mahogany body and ebony fretboard. AND it's only 9 lbs. Light for an old L-1000. He won't sell it. :(

Pretty rare, they only made 400 Interceptors from '84 to '91. From what I've read nearly half of those were made with factory equipped whammy bars. This is a first year production and believed to be the same bass in the brochure shown.

If anyone else wants a maple bodied G&L there's a really nice Climax in the for sale section.

Congrats on the Interceptor, my fave G&L bass after the L-2000.

from Guitars By Leo on the Climax:

Body wood varies…with a transparent finish they are generally ash though I’ve seen a few with maple bodies. With a solid finish they are almost always made from alder.

Bump on neck, warranty work. I have a Tribute ASAT guitar with a bump at the 12 fret neck side. I also have a new USA L-2500 with the same issue. Tribute has a 2 year warranty, I'm just out of warranty...figures. So do G&L's have a bump as a neck profile or are these a problem? I figure it may be a truss rod issue.

BTW, The L-2500 is a monster compared to a Fender Jazz. It's like the loud, wild sister to the reserved classic beauty of a Fender. Everything I always wanted in a Jazz, when you need a bit more and the Jazz can't deliver, the G&L will.

On their FB page, there was a mention of adding the MJ-5. I would assume that they are presently working out the details for the design, but these announcements are usually made to coincide with trade shows...who knows? it may be sooner.

As for a five string version of the JB2, I would also consider that as a candidate for my next bass. My only reservation would be the direction they take with the pickup design. If they went with a hotter-wound split J that had less going on in the treble, I would get one.
