Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 discussion thread

I've been using my 9.0 for all my gigs lately. Last night, the club had an SVT head and an Ampeg 8x10 cab. I thought this would be a good test for my 9.0 since:

A) I could prove to any disbelievers that the 9.0 is the real deal and it can drive a big cab with no problem and

B) For years I lusted for an Ampeg SVT and 8x10 Ampeg cab as my dream sound and rig. That changed when some good people here on talkbass turned me on to Genz Benz.

The bass player from the band before us used the Ampeg rig. He also was playing a P bass, as I was last night. He didn't use any pedals or effects. His sound was great. Just like the classic Ampeg sound we all know and (some of us) love. Then when we played, I unplugged the Ampeg head and plugged in my 9.0 and connected it to the cab. The difference was immediate and obvious. The 9.0 was much fatter yet also clear. In addition, I had my Tech 21 VT Bass pedal in my chain and on the songs I used it, I mimicked the SVT yet I was more pronounced in the house mix (according to the sound man) and it sounded great. I had all the volume on stage that I needed with plenty of headroom. (the master volume was at 10:00) This is a 4 pound amp driving a refrigerator sized cab! Just incredible! On top of that, the club uses countryman DI's; which I've heard were top of the line. Well, the soundman like the DI on my 9.0 better. He said it was "cleaner." Of course that could just be his opinion but that just confirms with me that the Shuttle's DI is just another reason why Genz Benz is tops. (IMO)

Finally, I have to say that for my taste, I didn't like the sound of the Ampeg cab nearly as much as my GB NeoX 212T. It was good but not very smooth.

I have had the exact same results with my fly dates.. the Shuttle 9 is just a cool 4 pound box...
I have had similar experiences with the DI out too.. i think i wrote about it way back when the shuttle 6 DI was being talked about..

I use the 4-10 PRO HLF with my Shuttle 9 and am very happy with it. Of course the cabinet is still heavy as hell, but at least the head fits in my gig bag. It is the best that that cabinet hasmy ever sounded in opinion. I also have a 410HLN and an 810e that I use with the Shuttle, but I generally gig with the PRO-410.

I know I've read this somewhere....maybe even in this thread, but cant find it again. Has anyone had any problems with the amp vibrating around on top of their cab when running it all pretty hard?

I'm using a barefaced compact, and they're pretty hard finished. I Wondered if anyone had any innovative solutions, or success regarding this? My 'keep it on top of the box' thinking extends as far as some sort of rubber mat......:cool:

No issue at all... My Aggy DB cabs are Tolex and no issue with Vibration.. The carpet type Fur on my Neox is even better with more friction... So no issues here.. and i do play LOUD

Same for me. I played outdoors on Sunday afternoon with my Shuttle 9.0 sitting on top of my tolex-covered 15/6. The head didn't move one iota, but neither did a hand-held tuner (which is much lighter) that was also sitting on top of my cab.

I think the degree to which the cab naturally vibrates--plus playing style, playing range, volume, etc.--may have as much to do with "amp travel" as the amp itself.

Yeah, the barefaced has a very low friction finish - running gains and master at around noon provides my shuttle with enough energy to start running round the top! The cab does vibrate quite considerably and noon and over, probably due to its weight I expect.

Based on those comments, I think my rubber mat should do the job then. Should be getting a new cab in the next month to get the full 900W out of the head - I cant wait! I absolutely love this amp, delivers in spades and tone is killer!! :bassist:

Demeter Compulator when I'm not running my V-Bass rig (in which I use to on-board compression).
I pretty much never play without the Compulator. Best pedel I've ever owned.
Doesn't alter you sound, is very transparent with regard with it doing it's job- so don't even notice it after a while, very smooth. Unless you crank it to extreams, it feels "natural".
Highly recommended. At least by me!;)


I use the CRAP out of my 9.0. I must have a ba-zillion hours on that thing. Seriously, A day doesn't pass where it's not doing something for at least a few hours.
I've been gigging a freakin' ton lately as well. So it's getting pounded on a gig 3-4 nights a week. At church on Sunday. Then practice at home as well.
I had some noise. Talked to Andy, he suggested changing the tube. Bingo! issued solved.
But now some other noise has cropped up. In the DI again as well. But intermittently. But that "intermittent" is becoming a little more frequent.
Again, my 9.0 has I would guess, close to 1000 hours on it, maybe more. It's being played through every single day pretty much.
And the little blue LED that does nothing more than make the tube glow all cool and such, is fading in and out.
Personally, with all the playing time I have on this thing, I think it just needs a good once over- a little TLC. Thats all.
The only reason I mention it publicly is that GB will address it in a professional fashion and maybe give some of us better incite to the amp itself.

So Andy, you have a PM for an RA #!!!!!

Yeah no issue with mine. Although i dont know the construction of the OPs cabinet.. I do know that the sides of my NEOX and Aggys are very solid and really dont Vibrate as much as some other cabs. They must have some sturdy internal bracing? Dont know how well or how rigid the wood is on the Barefaced cabs is.
I do play what many people would consider LOUD. i like to fee my pants move.:) They do , the amp doesnt though

I know I surely sound like the Energizer Bunny at this point.

The more I play my Shuttle 9.0 the more I fall in love with it. I have had Zero issues with mine and it's getting a workout. Playing in multiple bands, gigging, recording, rehearsing, and practicing at home. I drag this little thing all over. I keep a cab at home, one at rehearsal location one, one at rehearsal location two, and use an Ampeg 8x10 at band number two's rehearsal space. I just take the Shuttle with me wherever I go.

I did stick a NOS 1955 Mullard in my 9.0 when I first got it. The Mullard appears to be doing it's job. I could not tell much difference sonically, maybe a little warmer/darker.

I'm thinking of picking up a Shuttle 9.0 soon to push a Berg AE410. I liked the Shuttle 6.0 I had, but by the time I had to boost bass to get the tone I like, it just didn't have enough punch/power compared to the LMII and RH450. The Shuttle 9 seems to be the ticket. I just have to figure out how to pay for it without selling anything else. :D

To be clear, mine does get bumped around a bit taking it with me so much.
It's not a fault of the amp by ANY means.

It just needs some GBTLC like I said.

Yes, agreed, that's been my #1 rig for a few months now and it does everything and does it really well. The cab is very easy to transport (for a 410) and in 4 ohm form makes full use of all 900 watts from the Shuttle 9.0. I've had mine cranked wide open and the tone is wonderful, best rig I've ever used. (And it's so nice not having to lug around my SVT!!)

I think that you may like the shuttle 9 then... it has the headroom and the ummmph
