Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

Nice when a bass player can finally afford some frets.

Heh, nice! Didn't pay cash, traded old DIY stuff I wasn't using. Figured I should have one fretted fiver in the shop since almost all the preamps I build go in that sort of bass. But predictably, it's a one-off and not much like a Fender, Ric, MM, or anything else most people would consider normal. And I like it that way...

Well....I usually sit.....:smug:....

Actually love slide guitar.....I cannot explain my dislike of pedal steels.....Just the way it is....

Horror movie sequence

"What's that noise?"
"Sounds like pedal steel...."
"Let's split up and look around"
<spooky music>

At the recent GTG in Seattle the two very nice young servers seemed pretty unfazed by all the sturm und drang going on all day. Until I went into my slide bass schtick, that is. But I paid cash, so I don't think they can trace me.

I always liked the smooth pedal steel intro on Teach Your Children. It was written by a guy called Jerry Garcia. In return for Jerry playing his arrangement on the track, Graham Nash promised to provide some vocal harmony lessons to the members of the Grateful Dead.

Nash also gave Jerry a Stratocaster that underwent a great deal of wizardry and is known as Alligator. Heard it's up on auction, but not heard much since that fleeting headline. I believe the guitar was in Deborah Koons' stewardship. Saw Jerr first in the Wolf era, well past Alligator, the Travis Bean and undoubtedly others. I slapped an Alligator patch on my Gator gig bag.

Clued in enough about the world (such as a 15-year-old may believe) to grasp the fabric of Billy the Mountain. 200 Motels was in the mix then, oh hey I do have a story for Zappadan!

The infrared photograph on the cover of Hot Rats was taken at the swimming pool at Errol Flynn's estate. Or, what remained of it. It may now be a public park, believe I heard that but not feeling a need to look. In 1980 the estate was still in legal dispute and was a strictly "no trespassing" zone a couple blocks north of Mann's Chinese Theater.

What's up there, or what was up there, well for certain I will say the view from where the swimming pool was is one of the finest views of Los Angeles one might experience. And yet, a certain risk going up there (especially at night). The Hollywood Division of LAPD .... We observed many officers held rather free interpretation of "To Protect and to Serve". Avoiding contact always works in these cases .... The police were actually friendlier than others who also went up there. Such as when we find the hole in the fence we normally use is flanked by limos, and a shtarker says this is not a place you want to be now, well ...

Kind of brought a different personal perspective on Hot Rats album cover

Any steel guitarists here?......No?.......Good!......

Steel guitar is the primary reason that I'm unable to tolerate much of the Country music out there.....

It drives me nuts!........Fingernails on a chalkboard are preferable.......BAGPIPES are preferable!.....

Drunk guy in bar with harmonica is even preferable.....

Nasty whiney bloody instruments.....:sour:
I was in a band with a pedal steel player. Believe me, no country music was harmed. We were a psycho-delic jammy prog rock band (all original music).

Got that train sound going there ....

They sold corn cob pipes at the magazine stand. The same ones that sold the daily paper. Where did all those readers go? Who can read?

Sweet! First time I jammed with a PS player we played Charlie Parker's Billie's Bounce. To me PS is kind of like harmonica, or even more so accordion: one in a <insert random number> players is actually fun to be on stage with. Losing the pedals improves that number a bunch though IME.

The PS player had one of the largest effects pedalboards I'd ever seen! He even had a smaller, second one attached to one of the legs of his PS!

I meant the pedals on the steel guitar appliance, but even more so, the knee levers.

Buddy Cage made great usage of noise toys with PS. Had the good fortune to see him back with the NRPS several years ago in the club I used to mix in. Nice guy too. Didn't get to socialize much since we were both in business mode, but he got the business done in very fine fashion. I wasn't working on the show but everyone in the club including the band seemed to expect me to step up anyway, so I did.

As I’m kinda catch’ up I wonder is anyone had my schooldays problem:

My mother was a teacher
As was my older sister
My cousin taught my class English
My younger sister was the Head Girl Prefect

I was the baby.

I couldn’t put a foot outa place without the whole family knowing and discussing it at dinner!! :(

The cane that was used was a length os 3/4” diameter Bamboo and I’ll tell you, the damn thing hurt!
