...Probably as long as the last time I listened to the Mahavishnu Orchestra Birds of Fire.

I saw them do that album! 1972. They were on the bill with FZ & TMOI, Kent State University Gymnasium. I used to have it on cassette until the tape died.

Three trumpets, simultaneously. I was at a party once where a guy played two, but three was a new one on me until I saw her do it.

I've seen Jeff Coffin play three saxes at the same time, with Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, back in the '90s.

I saw RRK play a sax, a stritch, and a manzello at the same time while sitting in with FZ and TMOI during a jazz/blues fest in Miami, early 70s.(hadn't thought about that in years) Same night, Duke Ellington orchestra.

Just happened to be looking at the lineup for the Portland Jazz Festival in Feb. And what do I spy, but a GC show in a 220 seat venue, for twenty bucks plus service charge. Snagged a couple of tickets right quick. There are a lot of other really great acts scheduled this year as well., including some freebies.

And hadn't thought for a long time seeing Horace Heidt Jr. and his orchestra. Did get to know him a bit in the course of things. What I remember most is he said to me Chicago is Oz for Midwesterners. And recalling now he gave me a key ring from one of his properties. What an interesting thing to ponder this morning.

Hairdresser at half past noon today. I see from the reservation system auto-acks I'll be seeing a new salonist. Danielle is her name. She's my third at this salon. My impression is a great deal of drama occurs in that place. Service jobs (music being another service job) is hard enough without drama.

It's always a weird feeling for me when there's a new hairdresser. If you liked yours and she's gone, then it means asking after her at her former salon is strictly off-limits. And everyone just pretends everything is normal. But it's impossible not to notice high turnover.

A curious situation indeed. Seeing something that's obviously happening and behaving as is everything is normal sounds like a lot of life to me.

The New Riders version brought back the memory of the one country gig I did back in 69. The guitarist and I spent half the night trying to be in tune with the steel guitarist-did y'all know they can play between the 'frets'? 1/2 tones, 1/4 tones-aarrggh.
