I discovered that, knowing about my licence, they were rehearsing with a new younger guy who was using my amp and my rehearsal bass. He was auditioned at the last gig under the guise of a friend sitting in with the band using both my amp and my bass. Not knowing, I showed him how to handle a six string. I feel so foolish.

I feel for ya Paul. I went through the same kinda crap with a band about 3 years ago. Thought everything was fine then all of a sudden I hear the drummer's quitting. Talked to the guitar player and he confirmed it. Picked up my gear from the practice place and moved on. Two weeks later just for grins , I checked their website and lo and behold , there's a picture of the band with another bass player. About 5 months later , I ran into the guy at a jam session at a local bar. Turned out he had been dumped in pretty much the same way I was about a week before. Found out from him that they had auditioned him and had been practicing with him for about a month before they gave me the boot. Told him that the equipment he was using (mine) was theirs and there would be no problems.
The revenge. The guitar player had let me use a couple of tires and nice Oldsmobile rims to help me get my hot rod on the road. I think I even have a pic posted in the car thread in O.T. I saw the guy at a car rally about 3 weeks after I ran into the other bass player. He asked if he could get the rims back. I told him they were payment for the rental of my gear. He shut up and walked away rather quickly. Haven't seen him since.
The good. They were a couple of clowns anyway and this left me open to look for another band. About 2 months after I got booted I found my current band and have been having a blast ever since and the music is so much better. Keep your chin up guy. There's a rainbow just over the next hill.;)

I've run into insecure vocalists who routinely fire backing musicians for getting compliments.

Perhaps it was one of those situations, but regardless: if a happy audience wasn't enough to please those guys, then you're better off without them.

I've been fired from ....probably more than my fair share of bands in my time. But now I always worry when I get a big applause after singing my ass off on a tune then the band leader sings and receives silence after his/her tune. I'm learning to look for people who are less insecure about their place in the Universe. Recently lost a gig for these and other reasons but had a great laugh when the chick singers husband came to one of my first gigs with them and told her she was the weakest link in the group. Haha

Yeah, getting older is not for whimps. I used to be able to ride horses 7 days a week as well as trim & shoe. After 4 or 5 days I need a day off for sure.

I also used to have no problem working (sound company or production manager) a 14-16 hour show call (including load-in and out) and feeling ok the next day, but definitely not any more. The only way I can handle it these days is not to do too much manual labor like hurking heavy boxes and cable around.
