Help me to appreciate matching headstocks

I was wondering whether today was the first time the term 'matchy matchy' appeared on TB. Fortunately or unfortunately, it is not.

The title is overly broad. The opinion applies to matchy matchy headstocks. Exact same finish on body and headstock when plain headstocks are available and more typical of the classic look. Fenders, G&Ls, Peaveys etc. Iconic styles like Rics and Thunderbirds that always have matching or distinctively colored headstocks don't fall into this category.

Matching headstocks are just fine by me.

Thanks, I wish I could find that bass and get it back. The headboard belonged to one of my old high school girlfriends.

I used to hate pickguards on basses. Then I hated tort. Then rosewood. I now have an Olympic white P bass with tort and rosewood and love it. The headstock doesn't match though, but my Aerodyne (with pickguard and rosewood) does have a matching headstock and I love it too.

Not a fan of black P basses with black pick guards, rosewood, and maple headstocks. But I have one of those too.

Also sunburst - never been a big fan, always seemed *really* overdone - but I also have one of those.

My apologies for the initial title. The thread became a little not fun. I've never liked matchy matchy headstocks. I'm a fan of the matching headstock on this one that I bought. Not so much on some other instruments. It all depends. Also, I generally hate anything close to a tobacco burst, but I really like it on this bass. I'm a fickle b****

if you don't like matching headstocks, why would you want to make yourself like them? I don't either.. in the same category as burst finishes and tort pickguards for me.. *gag* and a burst finish with a tort guard and a matching burst headstock? omg, why..? to each their own

Yeah, natural headstock all the way. The only exception being black all the way - like on the American S.U.B. from Music Man... or a graphite neck.

Because there's no other aesthetic issue that's caused me to not buy a bass. I'm super flexible on body or fretboard material or color. If it plays great I don't care about any other aesthetic issue. Gold sparkle? Fine. Gold sparkle with a matching gold sparkle headstock. Bleh. It's really hard to get past...not impossible, but it's the one "looks" issue that really hits me.
