OK, my Club is pretty hacked up.......it was my dads, and in his infinite wisdome, when the neck I guess became separated from the body, he put a freakin' lag bolt thru the heel and a nut inside the body.
Yeah, he was stupid (and a complete and utter jackass of a human being, but that's another story) but it is what it is....
He also enlarged the pick-up holes under the pick-up surrounds, but for no reason I can understand. Maybe some other pick-ups were in there at one time- dunno.

ANYWAY..my bridge pick-up died and since this is pretty far from being a collectors piece, it's a players bass.
So, I'm looking at getting a new set of pick-ups. Hofner re-issue ones are PRICY.
And no one will do a rewind and guarantee the work. Reason being I guess is the way the bobbin is epoxied inside of the shell.
Lindy Fralin will do it, but again, they won't guarantee the work (Duncan is the same way).

So, any suggestions?
I had one place actually suggest an EMG guitar humbucker. Not opposed to the pick-up, just didn't know if a guitar humbucker would work.
(actually EMG's and an active pre-amp would be kinda nutty in it!! LOL!!!)

Just got my used '07 Icon today. So far I'm lovin' it ~ :D

Hey, I just realized I'm missing a screw on the control board!... :(

Here is my "new" Hofner 5000/1 Deluxe! I have had a few different Hofners over the years('63, Contemporary), but this one is the best of them. It sounds great acoustically, and even better plugged in. I will be taking this one down south on tour this summer with a Country/Singer Songwriter.

jefft54 - Very nice Icon. Welcome to the group. You are member 69. A very good year if I must say so. Enjoy.

69????????? Holy Crap I've hit the motherload :rollno:

Seriously now, pulled out the old beatles tabs books and have to say how well the Icon sounds played along with the CD's. I am curious if it was simply McCartney's preference to play up and down the neck rather than staying lower and using the D&G strings more often?

So where did you get the correct control board. I thought the Icon and CT's only came with the black buttons/knobs?

I bought this particular '07 Icon used ($325 w/ HSC), at a mom and pop store, so I don't know where the previous owner got all the correct knobs for it - although you can order the white/gold teacup knobs for around 20 bucks, I'm told.. It appears the switches have been painted white, but I can't tell for sure - the previous owner did a good job if they were painted..

By the way, I found a screw for the missing one on the control plate after these pics were taken..

I bought two in Heidelberg in 1966. Second one was the Beatle w/hard case. First one was a copy of a P-bass that had an interesting 'finish.' The body was covered with an imitation leather material; white on the front and black on the back. It was similar to the old tops put on vehicles in the same era. I have a photo of me and it somewhere, but I don't have it with me now (on the road) so someday I'll look it up and post it. Bass played better than the Beatle actually. Stayed in tune longer also!

I have always been curious about the Deluxe. It appears based on your comments that it is worth the price difference. You are member 72.

Just purchased a 63 Reissue! Wow! What a fun and great sounding bass. Any tips on getting the action lower ? The only thing I can think off is shaving the base of the bridge down. Has anyone done this? Neck relief is okay although not dead straight ( can't seem to get it to adjust to straight no matter how much I tighten the truss rod )
I'll post some pictures when I get a chance..

Here is a link that might help you with the truss rod adjustment:

I bought mine used and it was a good deal. They are similar to the 500/1 '63 but have a birdseye maple back and sides with a flame maple 1 piece neck. They do look terrific, but they are pretty costly brand new. I think that if I were to buy new I might go with the '63 unless of course, the 5000/1 was a particularly good sounding bass(which is largely the reason I bought mine).

Ed, for gigging and studio work, it's always a 5er for me. My stash of basses still includes a few 4 bangers, but they rarely leave the house.

I have had 5'vers and I have liked the sound. As I am getting older, the stretch is a little much for me and I have donated them to my family and my church. I play my Hofner 500/1, my Gibson SG and my Kala Ubass regularly now. I find the shorter scales and sound (flat wound Pyramid Golds and Pahoehoe strings) work well for me. I am intrigued by the Birdsong 5 and the possibility of a 5 string acoustic Kala. Time will tell what I end up with. Times they are a changing.
