Big fan of the HCT 500/1. Its slightly heavier than the Icon/Ignition bass, but well worth it. Its much more stable. It has the look and feel of the German made models. I find it sounds good with both rounds and flats on it.

Yeah, I've played an old early 70's one, which with I fell in love with Hofners..they're my favorite basses..and I love Rickenbackers, too.. I just don't have 2k to drop on one, and need help finding a very cheap, but good condition used or very nice ripoff.

I very rarely ever use my Ricks for gigging these days. I primarily play the Hofner bass now. Its lighter and I get a nice fat whomp sort of sound out of it. Very "Let It Be - Roof Top" tone, minus the bad intonation. I palm mute, Use La Bella extra light flats and nylon pics to keep things mellow. The one thing I noticed right away is that the neck is different on the CT than the Icon/Ignition. Its modelled after a 64 anyhow. Only thing I need to do to mine is change the tuners which I hate the look of (earlier generation HCT 500/1's had these angular Wilkinson style gears), and I'm either going to paint the control slides or replace them with a German one.

Me too! My Hofner Icon is my go to bass, it is light, stays in tune, is fun to play, and sounds great with LaBella Beatle flatwound stings.

Oh? That's interesting, very interesting. Can I buy a Rick from you? :hyper: haha, I love them, they're so amazing.

Its a good little bass and very reliable. The only thing about mine I dislike is the tuners. I want to get a set off of a newer CT because they're more traditional in appearance than the set I have on my bass now. I may end up just ordering a set from a V63 and just drilling the holes for them, but that's more of a last ditch option.

As for the state of my Ricks. I record heavily with them. One of which was my first bass and I've owned it for 18 years now.

Haha, I figured you wouldn't, 'cos I was kidding, but that's awesome! I wish I had the money to drop on a Rick.

They aren't really hard to find honestly. You just really have to know what and where to look. Every once and a great while they pop up in my store, also they're generally always all over gbase.com and ebay, and Rickresource.com. My dad bought my first 4003 for me when I was 12 and it was $748. I've had a few since then like a 4001 from 1981 that I paid $700 for, a 4003sMG that was a little more like $1200 and my latest 4003 for $950.

I'm 14, and my parents won't spend the money to buy me a Rick..I'd have to save up the close to $2k, and buy my own.

The CT gives you that fat Macca tone for sure with the right strings on it. There's a video on Youtube of a guy playing Get Back with a generation 1 CT (has no neck binding, and is virtually identical tp the 62 model year), with Rotosound black nylon strings and it just sounds awesome

Another reason to consider a CT or Icon is the price for Hofners is rising. The CT is up to $750 but it's $2,500 now for a German made.
