For me, when I downsized to the Fender Rumble 500 I decided to keep it in a rack. There wasn’t a rack kit for it so I bought a generic rack shelf and drilled holes to align with the rubber feet on the amp. It just made sense for me since my power conditioner was in the rack already which provides power for the amp, my pedal board, and my wireless.
Do what economically and efficiently works for you though.

When I gig on bass guitar, I usually take with me an aluminum carrying case containing my GK MB500, cables, two mics in their soft pouch, tape, multi-tool, small torchlight, pen...
For double bass gigs, a similar but smaller carrying case containing, the condenser mic, my Headway pre/DI, cables, tape, music...

Both my small amps have roll bars on the front to protect the knobs. Perfect place to clip a messenger bag strap. I sling them around my neck like a big necklace while my hands are full of other gear.

Although as in the case (no pun intended) of your approach in the post above, I think with these smaller, lighter machines today we can get even better than rack mount protection in smaller and lighter options for transport.
In any event, it's nice to have additional options to rack protection or padded gig bag. :)

HOWEVER, for smaller gigs, where i'm just using a 2x12, it seems kind of ridiculous to haul the 6U rack unit i'm using to house a "small amp head".

What is everyone else doing with their small amp heads?

I got a Pelican rifle case and cut the foam out. It now holds my DG m900 and my temple audio pedalboard so all I bring to shows is my bass, the pelican, and the cab. Has wheels and is flight ready. Was originally meant to hold an AR15.
