Jule Amps Monique part 5

Mo is thicker, volume is more even across the fretboard, and has those sweet harmonics and sparkle that only come from tubes.

The Magellan is great don't get me wrong. I have a date with mine and the woodshed in the next hour or so. It's very versatile with the two channels and contour, but I prefer the simplicity of Monique. It doesn't need anything extra to just sound fantastic.

@Dave W Totally agree re: Monique. It's absolutely lights out. I used to always chase tones but since getting my precious beautiful Monique several months ago, my life has become less interesting. The quest for dope and insane tones has ended! Remarkably, Monique + [overdrive pedal of the day] sounds incredible. Monique is remarkable because it is impossible to achieve a poor tone out of it. If my 8 year old decided to randomly adjust every dial on the panel, I still couldn't get a "bad" tone out of Monique. It's perfection as both a clean/pure tone as a preamp for dirty tones. There's nothing else like it. The fact that it is made in God's Country makes me love it even more. Pleasure Point!!!

Addendum- I also have a Noble and, although it's a wonderful piece of engineering, I'd choose the Monique 99 times out of 100. Jule's sensitivity knob is the magic dial.

Pleasure Point is where the "juice" comes from. And yes. I do wonder why anyone would leave their gear in the sand. ??

I have a Magellan as well. I do really like it a lot. I tend to play it through the drive channel and Contour B to get a similar tone to my Monique. And it is versatile and well-engineered. Monique is "my" tone but the Magellan is a great head and as you say, very versatile. It does the clean tone very nicely indeed, and it matches really well with the BA 12-3 stack.

Very sensitively said! The Monique 700 has push, depth, articulation and that sensitivity range as you like.

Yep, just got it a few days ago and installed it immediately. BTW, for Dove Cage owners considering making this switch, Jule's kit contains excellent instructions. It was really easy to do. The finish is really interesting--from a distance it looks pretty much jet black, but up close up you can see that it's actually an extremely deep dark brown, as the dye is slightly translucent. I really like it.

The objective is to keep the grain of the wood visible up close. The audience probably won't see the "wood" but it is there. Yes. These are dyed with transparent dyes. Same stuff used for guitars.

Okay maybe you'll understand with some 'splaining.
So.

For little gigs with electric bass and Ashborys I've used an SWR BBII since I bought it new decades ago. Been through the Bag Ends, the Celestions and now the LDS long throw 8"s. An Ashbory can take a toll on speakers. It developed a quiet buzz. Called LowDownSound. Yep they don't make them anymore. So I started looking. (There are some choices CRE & Faital)

What has 8"s? Oh yeah. The AER Basic Performer. I found a NOS one for a reasonable price. Brought it home, its okay. I'm sure my friends get great tones out of them but the BBII has tube goodness. Plan A was to use the Monique into it. Voila! Warmly tubey. But not perfect. Tried each channel. Gain matched. Tried effects return. Uh no. Into bass input was good not great. Something sounded muddled. The first channel has a XLR input and is switchable mic/line. Tried 1/4" to XLR kinda cable you can use with an IP from Monique line out to XLR. Actually still not right. Then! DI out XLR to XLR. The match was the 600 ohms the Monique outputs to the AER input which wants to see 600 ohms. Pristine highs to lows of rich clear Monique sound.

Okay. I'm not cheating on Monique. :)

Make sure the phantom power switches aren't engaged. They can do funky things to the sound.

You can get the grille direct from AER. I waited for one of their scheduled large shipments to the US and got one for around $20 for the spare combo that I sold.

Yes. This impedance matching thing is much larger than it seems. By that I mean that technically a great deal is going on, and a great deal of change can be made to the performance while impedance matching or purposely un-matching.

Monique expects and is expected to deliver 600 ohms out the DI. For the Line Out Monique expects and is expected to deliver 10K ohms. As a general (live on stage and the performance starts in 2 and a half minutes) rule you are going to be happy when you are sending a low impedance and receiving the same or higher. General rule.

The other way around, going from a high to a low impedance is not going to go well. This is when we start losing level and audio quality. Good general rule to go by.
