So does a Jazz with Chi-sonics sound like a Jazz but "on steroids" and hotter? I think after a gazillion years and a half gazillion J basses, I think maybe I realized I just don't like the Jazz sound. A Jazz with Chi's (or installing Chi's in one I have) has been on my GAS list for awhile, but perhaps it still won't do it for me.

Having owned one, I'd say your description is pretty close. Hotter output, more mids, less treble--I eventually tried steels, whereas I'm normally a nickel guy. I don't get along with J basses, either, but this was the closest I came to keeping one. Sounds great with flats, by the way.

Yes, the Chis are much hotter than J pickups. They do not really sound like Js at all, especially in the bridge position. I really like the way they sound passive, but when I ran them through a preamp, I was a little underwhelmed... Maybe it was just a bad preamp though...

Chis have a sizzle to them that is unlike other jazz-style pickups. At least that's how I would describe what's going on in my ears. That's why I use flats on mine, as it tames the undesirable part of the sizzle for me and warms them up a bit. Most preamps will bring that sizzle aspect more to the forefront, in my experience.

Interesting analysis... That is sorta what I do not like, the preamp accentuates the tinniness of the pickups, where it really evens out more vintage toned pickups.

I've been digging Pressurewounds on my DJ4. I used to use them on fretless back in the day but forgot about them until recently.

I really like your Chi 44-60. If it were a bit lighter and a diff color, I'd be all over it. Plus 5 of my 6 Laklands are up in the classifieds atm - I need the count to go down before it goes back up!

Instant review...the thing is awesome. Anyone considering one should go for it. One of the best SS basses I've played, superior to the feel of any import I've played.

I like the bridge pup solo'd with the tone rolled off.

That being said, I think I want Marty Bell to make it a pretty pastel color...

really!? what color ????

I like the burst but can see where a pastel might give it a mid-60s vibe....

So this week I upgraded the JO5 to a VT/VT setup, and CAN NOT BELIEVE the difference! Holy cow, it almost makes me feel like I can stop lusting after another LOG bass!
Pics and more details later, but WOW, why didn't I ever hear about this before, lol?

any new passive 2 pickup bass I get will have it....I am disappointed with the US PJ I got ....they were "too efficient" and routed the side jack before I told them I wanted VT/VT....maybe I can still do a stocked knob set....hmmmmm

My 55-02D is sitting at the UPS facility about 3 miles from my office, I just got out of jury duty, the fact that its so close is killing me and I have a MRI and property tax hearing on Friday...

Plus, I need to photograph my other 44-02D so that both of them can be sold. Too much to do!

No idea when I'll get to play the 55-02...

Randy, I guess you didn't read my posts when I got my early US JO in 2009. I sang the praises of the stack knob layout then. Being able to roll some treble off that bridge pickup was pretty darn cool in my book.

as you might know, a HOllow BOdy is called a "Hobo". when one LOGGer (Markus?) got a HOBO...he posted and some one else posted they would "shank a Hobo" to get that HoBo....and it stuck...maybe not the most "politically correct" but hey....we are NOT PC around here...well MANY of us are not...

Yep, not a fan of the fralin sound. It lacks punch...

...no punch but I LOVE the Fralin sound....that is why I was happy as punch ( ) when Lakland came out with the vintage series....

I was practicing slapping last night (it wasn't pretty) with a Fralin equipped p bass with flats. Oh, it was thru my Tonehammer, so it had plenty o punch for me.

I still cannot slap....some popping here and here but no slapping....I try periodically but no go....too much palm...

What's the stock pickup in a US Duck Dunn?

now...Neo.....pre-Neo, Lakand...Pre-Lakland - -Fralin.

Its a Hybrid Split Pickup Quacker series.

I think they had the Neo punch for a time and the Fralins before that...they constantly evolve.

Doing a cheap plug here, I put my Lakland Skyling 55-64 up for sale in the classifieds if anyone is interested, I really love this bass, but I'm selling it and a few other things so I can get a US Lakland. Finally caving into temptation.......

+1 on tensioned sets. Someone in the last thread asked about my Circle K balanced 5 string set. They've settled in after a few weeks of playing and they're the best wounds I've ever played. Plus, its a 0.150 set....daaaayummmn that B sounds good!

does it fit in the nut? did you have to file it?

can you even pluck it? sounds like a bridge tension wire to me at 0.150!

Thanks! I actually think this and the Decade are great choices. For me...they are ties, but I like the HB's bridge pickup placement way more.

if he orders a US Decade he can get the pickup put where ever he wants....hmmm...sounds like I heard of someone doing that....who???

Okay, so my ex-55-94 gladly reached the destination point and even played a few gigs in the weekend. The new owner sent me a SL55-94 Dlx. in return. Since I didn't post it in this thread, so here you go (see below). Some may wonder at the logo on the head, some already know.
Now, as we were interchanging our pickups (he DID admit that he liked the LH-3 after all!) a question occured: for some reason the wires on the LH-3 are way fatter than those on the Bartolinis. It is like, they could handle 380V, - but why on earth...? Has anyone heard about this before? I am interested and will address Hanson if noone here has a clue.

This is the 2003 55-02D that I got last week. This one is so different than the 2008 55-02D with the LH3 that I traded to Marcel. Not sure if its the Bart's or just "soul" of the bass, but this is what I expect from a 55-02, sheer perfection.

I've only been playing bass since 2010, and I always felt a little unimpressed with P-basses (The Dude being an exception). Until recently I hadn't tried playing with a pick, instead preferring finger style. Well, last night I discovered the amazing sound of a P bass with the tone cranked being played with a pick. Although I think fundamentally I'm always going to be a jazz bass enthusiast, I finally gained a solid appreciation for the Precision. I suppose it helps that it was a Lakland...

On that note, I played my Glaub this past Sunday and got lots of compliments on the looks (some on the sound too). Wilkins' CAR is so rich...

My Skyline Duck Dunn is the heaviest bass that I own...but it sounds goooood!!!

there was a DUCK at Lakland that topped out at almost 12...Greg can attest to that.....it just sat on the rack....not sure what happed to it.

my heaviest bass was my T-40 (nick named "the tank"....well in the 11.5 lbs range.
