Modulus Mob

Also, question for all of you: i just did a set-up on my vj4 and got the action down to about 3-4/64" at the 12th fret and 4-5/64" at the 17th fret. feels great! so my question is; is it to be expected that the bass will require pretty light touch to avoid buzzing with the action set this low? i can play moderate/light-ish with no buzz at all, but when i start trying to put any OOMPH into it, it starts giving a (not entirely unpleasant) bit of buzz, and when i start really digging in i get straight-up clank and buzz all the time. no fretting out or anything. I'm just wondering if those of you with similar action on your moduli have the same situation or if there are any out there who have managed to get it that low with NO FRET BUZZ WHATSOEVER.

to clarify, i play in a hard rock band right now, where digging in is sometimes necessary. but i am also trying to get better at my technique and learn to play smoother and more evenly without needing as much power in the right hand. any way to play that way yet still sound aggressive? without distortion that is (though i do use a deluxe bass big muff pi for some songs).

Wow. Cool. I like that there's a flea jazz style bass, I've maybe seen one or others ever. I do prefer the flexibility of the jazz pickups and I love the quantum style body. FU's don't have the exact same shape but close! Best of both worlds imo.

So in other news: NBD for me! I just received a '96 q4 sweet spot turbo w/flame top in Orange crush color! Custom made with a 2tek bridge. Pretty rare for modulus to do from what I understand. Shall I post pics??

Bahahahaha of course I know the answer to that. They will be posted shortly.

Here's the new to me '96 q4. A bit of typical finish chipping at the fingerboard as shown in the last photo. I find that common in models that are as old as this. Any recommendations on fixing/smoothing that out?

Other than that there are a couple dings in the body finish but nothing major. It also came with one of the knobs pretty badly bent, which the seller said he was shocked to hear about when I brought it to their attention. They're gonna file a claim on said parcel service I guess :rollno:. All in all I still feel like I got a solid deal on a great bass.

Other than that the bass plays and looks positively gorgeous. I immediately felt comfortable playing the neck, great action, no buzz. The tone of the pickup placement is pretty wonderful. I like how soloing the sweetspot pup makes it sound almost exactly like my musicman and then the bridge pickup is all midrange growl! I will probably swap out the preamp for something 3 band when I can afford it. Dunno bout the pups.

Well, there it is.

Congratulations!!! That is an amazing, unique Q4. Special in many ways.
There is something magical about the pre-truss rod Modulus necks.

I am sure that the clear coat can be touched up. Anyone have a foolproof DIY? If not, I'll bet that the best automotive paint tech in your area (gasp!) knows just how to make clear coat over plastic look like new.

I'll be going by the Modulus booth today at NAMM......oh and by the way, I met Geoff Gould yesterday [a friend of mine knows him...he brought 1 guitar to NAMM in someones booth ] and we got to talking about composites.......He said I could come make necks with him anytime I want ! He also thanked me for buying/having a Modulus bass. Nice guy. Hope I get to talk to him more this weekend.
