I don't see myself selling this gem of an instrument ever ever ever. I have said that before and failed, but with this bass... I'm surprised by its quality every time I pick it up. Works brilliantly on recordings, too.
It is, but I can see where it comes from: I've played many pre-CBS Jazzes that are far from the quality that this bass has.
That's a beautiful instrument. Definitely aging with grace.
The words "wife" and "gift" being in the same sentence probably would be the determining criteria I would use to decide which one to keep.It's a toss up, and very soon I'll have to decide on which one to keep, since bass is no longer my principal instrument and probably never will be again:

The one on the left was a gift from a luthier friend, the one on the right was a custom build from another luthier friend which my wife paid the deposit on as a birthday gift, and my boss gave me an unexpected bonus a few days before it shipped that covered the balance. Both sound and play equally great, weigh within a few ounces of the same, and have custom pickups and electronics, so it's essentially a coin flip.

The luthier who built that one is deceased too, so there's also that. My wife saw me playing one of his basses at a big guitar show after party 20 years ago, met the luthier, and actually was the one who brought up buying a custom build from him. But the other luthier is one of my best friends, and a sometime business client, so I may just have to bite the bullet and keep both.

My "current number 1" bass is the bass that's always been number 1 - my '73 Rick 4001. Of the 25 other basses I own, there are a couple that probably have a "better" tone; there are a couple with slightly nicer necks; and one or two that are just a hair easier to play. But, none of them are better balanced (on my shoulder), and none of them have everything I want in one package. Except, maybe, my '01 Rick 4003; but IMO the 4001's 50 year old Hi-Gain pickups sound a little better... However;
The bass that you could say is my #1 at the moment - insofar as getting played most often - is my first fretless bass. A left handed, 32" scale '93 Fury Anthem lined fretless, made by a small, one man shop in Canada. Being a lined fretless, I'm finding it pretty easy to play. It is just a touch neck heavy - probably because of the Grover Titan tuners, but it's not a problem. The neck could be slightly shallower, but I have other basses with the same neck profile; and, again; no problem. Overall, it's an extremely nice bass, and right now, it's pretty much monopolizing my playing time. My only real problem with it? I wish it had a "better" fingerboard. IMO, Pau Ferro is just a little soft for a fretless bass. It has definite marks of round wounds on it; not bad enough to need work, but... it's obvious that it was played a lot in the last 30 years. It has Roto TruBass88m tape wounds on it now. Which brings me to the pickups; hand wound by the maker, they are very definitely made to sound like an upright bass. I had TIJF's on it for a few days, and the bass just hated them. There were none of the TI's trademark mids and highs - at all; just what little low and low-mids the TI's have. So, on went the Roto tapes; and the bass came alive. I've messed around a lot with trying to emulate an upright over the years, and I have some basses that can come fairly close - as close as a fretted electric bass can, anyway. But, this Fury Anthem? It comes... scary close. Especially if I play it right...
So, I suppose you could say that my "current #1 bass" is this Fury Anthem. But, sitting right beside it, next to the amp in my living room? The Rick 4001...

If you don't need the money or the space, why not keep both? It's not like you're talking about a Geddy size collection here.
These play way above their price point. Such great value in an inexpensive bass. I love the colour on this one.

Space is at a premium and on top of that we're strongly considering moving overseas. So something else would have to go instead, at the least. Losing all my amps and electric instruments and just going acoustic is going to be very tempting, actually.
