Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

I use a Carvin B1500 with a (rack mounted) DMX compressor unit through my BT2 and it sounds great. I've also used the Mesa Prodigy with it and it sounds great as well. The Carvin is the best SS amp I've used, also the heaviest.

Nice! I still love the B1500. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

Hi there,

Last week I placed my order for a Super Twin. Already the waiting is agonizing! ;-)
So to alleviate the pain I'm posting this here.

I have been gigging with a Bag End S15L-D and S15LX-D, and sometimes just one of the two, with great results. However, when using just one (on a smaller gig) while playing a P with flats, I find the lows lacking and the mids overbearing. EQ helps, but it never gets to sound creamy and thick.
I also have an Aguilar GS112, which I can get to sound that way, but just not loud enough.

I suspected a Super Twin might be what I need, and Alex from Barefaced agreed.

So what are your findings, if you use a Super Twin or one of the other 12" cabs? Please entertain me while waiting!

I can't comment on ST directly but the BT2 with tweeter off is close enough. I find it has so much bottom end I could kill people literally.

I am actually afraid to crank it (always have the fear of blowing the cabs generally) but man I did open it up once and it shook the building and even though I wanted to see just how much bass the cab can give and cranked the bass knobs both on the amp and my trilogic preamp to the max, the cab never farted out not even close (I was extra cautious though but really, it seemed like the cab didn't even take a single sweat). And literally everybody standing in that room felt the bass on their chests me included.

I was like... Just completely surprised at how much bass this thing can put out without farting out. Killer thing really. Really hard to describe with words, you have to feel it on your own to really grasp what I am saying. Some 8x10's can't do what BT2 can honestly.

A friend of mine has 2x15" Electro Voice speakers and in no way can they move as much air or be even nearly as loud as my BT2.

The cab is also very very consistent with a very consistent loudness output throughout the bass register. You never find a certain note on the bass lacking in mids or bass, it always cuts through.

Ha, braver man than I! I have never dimed the bass knob on an amp or bass in actual gig-volume use, the the BB2 SM, BB2+SM, or any other cab, really. Maybe heavily boosted for dub-style, but keeping the volume under control to compensate.

There was a thread not long ago by a guy who was complaining that his cab blew. Upon explanation, he's turned the bass all the up on his instrument and cranked it up. Clearly he did not have a Barefaced cab, lol. It's gratifying to know the BT2 stood up to the test, but I am glad that I learned this from you running the risk instead of me!

Well, I didn't run the gig like that. I never do this anyways. It was just a test. In real situation I never actually even boost the bass beyond 12 (flat) otherwise there is absolutely too much going on.

And I did that for like 30 seconds or so, fiddled a bit on the bass (gentle playing not digging in) and my 1001RB-2 was like half open so did not even send the whole 700W RMS into the cab. I think that this cab should handle this thing with ease and it did. If the sound became compressed or started farting out I would have ceased to play immediately. And I was playing solo so I would hear it happening.

I don't know really, I am not a tech guy but honestly, a 1600W rated cab should take a minute of bass boost like this while receiving like 400-500W RMS.

Now, if there are some tech guys here to confirm it or mark it dangerous it would be good to know. :)

Edit: I wouldn't even dare to do the same while opening the 1001 to its limits and bass boost it. I don't want to loose my hearing lol.

I have a super twin which I use with a Mesa D800. I play in a loud (sometimes VERY loud) energetic 3 piece rock band in pubs, clubs with no PA support. The ST is amazing. It's pretty light, easy to lug about, looks great and most importantly sounds brilliant. I like my bass to sound "bassy".. If you know what I mean...and the ST has immense bottom end and is incredibly loud and clear. I can't imagine any situation where I would need anything more than this set up.

Well I changed my mind about selling my 2xOne10 stack after I carried one of them to the car before driving to potential buyer. The privilege of owing a cab weighing just 7 kg but loud as a good 15 kg is not smth I can leave. After I came back home and plugged my GK MB200 in it I understood that it was just my Aggie TH500 was really wrong match with these cabs. But GK pairs with One10 perfectly IMO. So I'm now waiting for my Mesa D800 to be delivered to make 2xOne10 some proper work-out :D

Of course, I agree. But if the speakers don't start to distort or fart out I assume they can handle the thing.

I guess I'm confused then. Saying that your amp was only half open so it's not sending all of it's wattage is not accurate, but you know agree with me?

Well, that sounds like things worked out well for you in the end. You already bought the Mesa so you're not going to spend any more than you've already spent on amps (at least not yet ;)). And you decided don't have to a) spend more money buying another cabinet b) and also try selling the One10's you already have.

But you do realize that this is Talkbass, don't you? Deciding that you like and will keep gear that you already have rather than spending even more money on more gear is something that is STRONGLY discouraged around here. Hopefully a moderator doesn't hear about your decision and decide to temporarily ban you for that kind of transgression! ;) :D

If I cranked my volume knobs higher then the bass output into the speakers would be even higher. So, safe to say, the head was not pushed to the max when I tested this. How many watts did go into the cab when I tested it is beyond me, since I am not an electrician to calculate it or something.

What I agree is that you can fry a speaker with the knobs twisted "the wrong way" even before you crank the amp to the max even though the amp is rated below the cabs rating.

If I mixed up something please do correct me since every info is a valuable one to take care of our gear even better. Obviously I tend to rely on my ears much more than I do into my technical knowledge about amps and cabs. My education is in music (jazz bachelor) and computer science (although I dropped out after 2 years to pursue my music career). I know how a speaker sounds once it is blown and I can (at least I hope to) tell the difference between the speaker handling the output or being pushed beyond its limits. So far it has worked for me since I have not yet managed to blow a single speaker in my 25 years of life and my 14 years worth of bass career.

Anyways, I would be really surprised if the 1600W cab blew up so easily. I mean, thats a lot of power. My rehearsal room where I tested it is literally a 4x2m space (cca 13 feet x 6.5) and I am pretty sure that I have not reached its 133 db SPL rating since I would otherwise be probably sitting at the hearing doctor right now. :P

Ok guys. I am researching like crazy for the proper head for my big twin 2. There is a buyer up to buy my GK 1001RB and this is a nice opportunity for me to try and search for an even better match for my BT2.

Maybe someone here can help - I like a hifi but warm and smooth tone. My main bass as you could see on the pics I posted here is my American Jazz Bass Standard with Nordstrand pickups.

I kind of like the tone of my BT2 and 1001RB2 but I found it much thinner compared to when I plugged in my friends Mesa Big Block 750 which does have a tube preamp.

I kind of regret that I sold my Genz Benz Streamliner 900 before i bought this cab just so that I could see how that would work.

Anyways, I am not a full tube sound player. I prefer the SS attack and like the tubes to just add more warmth in the mids so no overdrive or some super gain is wanted from me.

Anyways, there is a guy here selling a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0. How would that work? Any experiences with Genz Benz stuff and BF cabs? Would it be an upgrade or a downgrade from my 1001RB2?

I play mostly jazz, funk, soul and rock so I need something more refined.

The shuttle 9.0 sells at a nice price (420€ in europe) so that might be a deal.

Would I be better off with the d800 or a fusion 550? Or maybe MB800 fusion?

Weight to me doesn't really matter for amps, I just want a good tone.

OTOH, esse music in italy has a fusion 550 for sale at 980€, which is also a great deal.

I have a BT2 and play soul and funk. I use a fender P, Sadowsky J or a Lull PJ which has Nordstrands.

I largely run a Monique which can do both old school 60's and modern funk. It has a valve rectifier so may be a bit too old school for you.

I also have run my Markbass TTE 500 through it and it is the best this amp has sounded. The Markbass should be quite readily available in Europe. Bit does however have quite a baked in retro sound and the EQ is limited.

Thanks! Any opinion on an EBS Reidmar 750 pairing? I was also looking at this amp as it is pretty refined in sound and I am also a secret fan of Tal Wilkenfield sound so perhaps this would work for me.
