Thanks for the reply. The amp definitely had more heft with the KT88’s, although I am not sure if it was just because of switching from 6550’s. The amp sounded great before. More than anything, I guess I am more concerned about a failing tube. I am going to throw the 6550’s on my tube tester to see if there is anything amiss. If they check out fine, I’ll just chalk it up the factory throwing in whatever tubes they had.

Got a chance to take my new Terror Bass 500 for a spin. Hesitated buying because of the post EQ DI and my experience with the limited EQ on the original model. Shouldn't have hesitated. bass sounded awesome on stage and apparently out in the crowd. The EQ is just spot on. Easy to get a great sound and the preamp is super sensitive. I can get many different sounds by adjustment in playing. This is a sweet little amp!

Doesn't feel like the bonkers power on tap with the original model. But plenty powerful. Anyone know if the 4/8 ohm switch just a limiting switch like the original?

My cabinet thanks you for your concern. :) I would think as long as the cab can handle the power and the impedance is greater than 4 ohms it would be okay? I believe it worked that way on the original Terror Bass. It just choked power when switched to 8 ohm and let out more at 4 ohms.

I'll ping Orange and see if they have any insight.

In regards to the 4/8 ohm switch on the Terror Bass 500:

"Thank you for your e-mail.
It’s not really either impedance matching or a power choke.
It is part of the limiter circuit which introduces an extra resister when the impedance is switched to add resistance to the amount of power/signal going from the speaker out.

I hope this is helpful."

So it sounds like you can get more power out of the amp into 8 ohms if you so choose.

Had my first practice with the Terror Bass on Monday, after enjoying it at low volumes at home. I figured I'd just use the cab at the practice room.

No matter what I did, it sounded bad. No heft, didn't sit well in the mix, I was having to run the volume really high to be heard, and I got nowhere with EQ. Got really disheartened, honestly, and considered taking it back to try something else.

Had a practice for a different band last night and figured I'd bring my cab, a Barefaced Compact, just to be sure I didn't like the Orange. Lo and behold, plugged it in and it immediately sounded great. Took a bit of playing with EQ/gain/volume to get exactly right, but I got there and I'm happy now. Even at 8ohm, and volume considerably less than half, the drummer was asking me to turn down - and that was with two guitars with half stacks, one JCM900 and one Mesa Dual Rec

Got a gig with it tomorrow that'll confirm it, but right now I'm thinking it's a keeper. Want to have a look at that other cab though, think it's a Markbass, can't understand how it sounded so awful.

I tend to find that with amps with a very strong inherent voicing cabinet pairings are much more difficult. Something like your barefaced which are designed to sound fairly neutral, at least according to the manufacturer, may allow more of the amp voicing to come through without adding too much additional coloration. The markbass cab on the other hand are often cited around here as being very strongly voiced cabs, so they may add a layer of coloration to your orange that you don’t like. It will certainly depend on the actual cab in question, my only experience with markbass stuff is their 2x10 and 1x15 cabs, and only paired with their amps as provided backline.

I do know that I’ve strayed away from classic/vintage style _x10 format cabs with some of my tube amps as I’ve found the pairing is not very conducive to a sound I want. With a flatter amp like the ampeg tube heads it’s not as much an issue, but with a fender or hiwatt style tone stack it very much was for me. I’ve mostly been using my AD200 with a couple bergantino cabs. I’ve really enjoyed that pairing, the NXV210 especially. No tweeter, so it has a natural top end roll off, and ported so it has a good bit of bottom, but a very nice and even midrange response when paired with the orange.

I had my old Terror paired with a Genzler MG212T. It sounded fantastic and had more than enough volume on tap. Very warm and round tone. Vintage style goodness!!

The manual says a minimum of two minutes. I usually give it about 5 while I’m doing other things. I’ve not noticed anything different after an hour. Usually let it cool down on standby for 10 or so minutes if I can.
