To be honest... That Cutlass P is only a couple $100 more than an American Standard P and I think the difference in build quality is worth that. Those MM necks are worth the $. I'd probably pick up a used one in the $1000-$1200 range.

As one of the few people here that has touched one, let me tell you I was smitten with the caprice at NAMM. Have one on order, will dish plenty of details once I have it.

I think it strikes a great balance of something a little fresh while keeping what is great about every other P/PJ in the world.

And it is a sterling neck!!

Agreed. I'm not a big fan of non-Fender basses that look like Fenders. But there seem to be many many bassists who like that sort of thing so it makes me wonder what took the EBMM company so long to do it...or have they done so before?

Sterling Ball has heretofore been vocal about how the company has their niche, they do what they do, and while the trend is to go nostalgic, that is not what they are about.

My guess is that bass sales are slowing and they have had to embrace the fact that the bass community is really steeped in what I call the 3 major food groups: Ps, Js and MMs.

And since they always had the MMs, where is the growth for them, in a market where fewer kids play guitar than in prior years, and where you have numerous international online platforms you can use to buy second hand gear at much more competitive prices? It is going to be in the much larger P and J space. Take a well proven (i.e. low risk) concept like the P or J, run it through your design process and call it "innovative," and there you go.

From the demos I viewed the Cutlass sounds great. In fact it sounds just like a P bass LOL. Let's see if the community embraces it. If nothing else, Fender crossed the line and stepped in their sand box with the Dimension (which is a great bass by the way). So years of vocally eschewing nostalgic design notwithstanding, it only makes sense that MM did this to step into Fenders.

The Caprice is mildly appealing, but I think it'd have been cool to instead offer the StingRay as a P/J with an active/passive switch. The lack of a 5-string model is also kinda disappointing. C'mon Sterling, you're a bassist for cryin' out loud!

The white Caprice with maple neck sure looks pretty to me.
