Playstation 4 VS Xbox One

The fact that they changed everything about it shows the dedication they have in making their customers happy. I'm going Xbox One all the way

I disagree entirely. Sony listened to their customers during development and didn't put anything into the system that their customers said they didn't want. Microsoft disregarded everything their community said, did what they wanted, and once the uproar started Microsoft basically told their community to screw themselves. It wasn't until they noticed their pre-sales were dismal compared to Sony's that they actually did something.

+1 on all counts

They do appear to have a superior OS and platform, but the graphics are not on par with Sony, which is the superior GAMING machine as far as hardware goes. Remember, the life cycle of this round of consoles is going to be about 8 years...If the Xbox is behind now, how will it be down the line?

This is certainly something to consider. The Xbox One is certainly leaning towards being a media centre with gaming capabilities, whereas the PS4 seems to be leaning towards being a gaming console with media centre capabilities.

So many of the Xbox One's extra capabilities also seem limited to the US at the moment, nothing hugely interesting being offered anyway. Netflix will be on both, so, that's me covered.

The PSN is going to require a pay to use subscription this time round, like the xbox live system. However, PS+ has a history of significantly better free games than xbox live.

None of the xbox exclusives are remotely interesting to me either, which is one of the few valid reasons for buying an xbox. I just don't see the point in spending more money for a lesser machine (everyone having to own a kinnect? Pfft!).

Also, while these things don't have a habit of looking pretty, it looks like they went out of their way to make the Xbox One look like a late 80's/early 90's VCR.

I have a PS4 preordered. Though due to a crappy retailer, I had to cancel my original preorder and make one with another retailer, but this ended up being after the day-of-release guaranteed date. Will get it before Christmas, just not sure when.

BF4 side-by-side comparison with X1 and PC:

Unfortunately, the video compression on youtube probably hides a lot of the fine detail of any differences and it looks like they're running with different gamma settings on the two monitors.

Hard to say in a YT video like that, with the videos already scaled, compression of the YT videos and what looks like quite different lighting settings! When the proverbial hits the fan and there is a lot going on, I'd rather have a decent PC which can look better and keep the framerate high. Plus the PC which I have in the planning stages is going to be running a 5760 x 1080 resolution :D

Something else in the + box for the PS4 is that it runs 1080p native, which should make things a little sharper.

According to the article neither are actually 1080p native for this game. The X1 version is 720p upsampled in the TV and the PS4 is 900p upsampled in the console. It might be that the TV has better upsampling, difficult to tell from a youtube video.

They're talking 60fps for this game so I doubt that a faster monitor would help. Of course, there's nothing stopping a developer writing a game with less graphical detail and a faster frame rate, but I'm not convinced that there would be much benefit.

I suspect the choice will come down to which console has the exclusives you want most.

Surprised that it wouldn't be (as it will be possible, given the PC version is expandable). The one thing I would say about the xb1 is that the edges look more jagged in the videos. Either way, mass online footage is what I want to see.

I've seen them make claims in the past about console games being over a certain FPS, I still call BS on a lot of those claims!

Another factor is that most of the folk I game with are also going the PS route again, and I mostly play online with folks I know.

Probably 24, it's what I've got at the moment. Have a dual setup with the 24 and a 17 (the 17 in portrait, so it's pretty much the same height as the 24). Certainly easy enough to see as I don't have my nose to the screen (granted, that's typically for writing, not gaming, but it did work well in some RTS games!).

The side monitors tend to be angled towards you. Functionality really depends on the game and how it is designed to work with such setups, ideally the central field of view remains the exact same as it is if you'd have had a single monitor, but the side monitors give you a peripheral view.

A friend of mine has a 3 monitor setup, certainly makes things more immersive, plus you'd be surprised what you can pick up out the corner of your eye when playing. Nice having the extra detail instead of just a bigger picture that you need to be further away from too.

Lines between monitors is a pain, true. Making sure to get a monitor with as thin a bezel as possible is going to be an added requirement when speccing them!

Some manufacturers also went as far as producing high aspect ratio monitors which were curved, though I think it's always been too niche (and far too expensive vs 3x cheaper monitors):

Now that's what I'm talking about! When those come down to about $500 I'll get one.
