RULES YOU'D LIKE TO SEE ON TB

The thread title that shows in the forum can only be fixed
with a mod edit, so there is going to be a whole lot of
snarky going on.

That sounds like what happens anyway.

I think that every time you disagree with someone and it turns ugly there ought to be a smiley that depicts the offending parties to kiss and make up, or just a hug. A hug would be nice, that and a bowl of ice cream. Chocolate with peanut butter swirled. Yeah, that's my rule.

I think they're fine the way they are now, and fully agree that any form of politics should stay off limits. I see whats going on politically on the tube everyday, and don't come here for more - this is where I relax. :cool:

I'm sure they do. I have been looking their site over. I had to sign an agreement when I registered not to post obscenities, not post vulgar material and not to use inflammatory or threatening statements to others. That seems quite reasonable to me. I would never do this anyway.

I love the silly and inappropriate, but I do draw the line at being mean and ugly.

To expand on my original post a little; I find it interesting a site dedicated to artists engaging in artistic expression would support the censorship of ideas and opinions. Music has always mirrored and helped shape outlook on society. I've witnessed this in my own lifetime having lived through some interesting times where music was definitely used as a sounding board for social ideas.

But it's just music, just ideas, just words - nothing harmful or to fear. Zappa tried to show this when he took on the PMRC, and long before that.

I'm 50+ years old and understand kids are going to flame and mouth off. However I am provided a mouse and can choose with a click what is info and what is not. Thank you TB for providing introductory snippets of threads so I can read what a thread is about before entering - this saves me a lot of time.

Of course I'm aware a lot of this site is also dedicated to gear, sales & trades, technical info, instruction and a lot of other bass related stuff. I spend a lot of my time in Gen Inst, Technique and DB Theory.

I should have a choice to participate in a discussion of things uncomfortable in a reasonable fashion. I know things can get heated when discussed from different points of view, but I see that as healthy discourse as long as respect and common courtesy are shown. I do not see what is basically censorship as contributing anything healthy or progressive in a free or creative atmosphere.

Thanks John, for allowing me to speak my peace. As stated - I know the rules here, I agree to abide by them. I think it's unfortunate they are here, but I didn't build this site. I can hope to maybe change and influence what I feel is a flaw. No big.

I appreciate a place where I can come talk & share about my favorite thing in the world -- bass.

first of all, i respect your opinion here, and am responding only to address some points that i happen to disagree with. :).

maintaining a level of decorum and maturity is hardly "censorship".

again, i say, take a gander over on usenet some time. there's no rules or moderation there. there's also a lot of good folks that participate on usenet. you might find what you're looking for there.

as for topical censorship, the only thing we censor (outside of hateful/trolling/willful ignorance) is religious and political discussions, in the main forums. in the lobby these discussions are allowed, under a set of guidelines intended to reinforce the concepts of "mutual respect" and "intelligent discourse".

in my experience, after participating in online discussion groups since 1988, is that discussion forums mirror civilisation, in that only those with rules and structure develop, whereas those with no structure flounder and die. the lowest level of discourse allowed on a forum by those running it will be the common level discourse on it. the more "above average" a discourse is, the less common it will become. we (As site mgmt) demand a higher level of decorum and behavior on this site to maintain the integrity of the conversation, and it must be working. talkbass is the largest single-instrument discussion forum on the web.

the places with no rules disappear quickly, or else they adopt rules quickly. harmony central is a great example - they used to be much looser in their rules. they've added more and more rules over the years, until now where they are pretty much like us except they allow for vulgarity, whereas we do not, and they allow for politics and religious discussions, whereas we only allow those in the supporting member lobby.

just my observations :).
