SBMM Stingray Short scale

There’s been a lot of talk over on the MM Short Scale thread about a clear pick guard. I have a Daphne blue bass and think the white pick guard is painfully dull. So, this morning, after reading about clear pick guards on the other thread, I completely removed mine.

I think it looks much better. I’m not thrilled by the screws but think a clear pick guard might work. I’m also going to the hardware store to see if I can get replacements for the original screws with the counter sunk heads. That might make the complete absence of the pick guard more tolerable. Unfortunately, because of the way the screws ever so slightly damaged the paint upon removal, I can’t go with nothing covering the holes.

I've been mostly using that beauty in the backround for the last couple of weeks so I can't say for sure I'd notice the difference in tone. I'm actually kind of happy about that too, no regrets that way. It still sounds like a Stingray though for sure. I mostly like maple fretboards for the feel anyway.

what kind of bass is that in the background btw? Forgot to ask

Dang! The magnets in these pickups have a lot of pull. I adjusted mine upward last night and gave the foam underneath some time to decompress and now I'm getting a pretty strong warbling sound from the strings being pulled.

I was going to try an experiment and put some small neodymium magnets on top of the poll pieces, but I can see now that isn't going to work as the magnets are plenty strong as is.

That’s exactly what I want to do. Did you buy the white sbmm stingray shorty or just the neck? Also, how was the swap? Any issues?
Nope, I mentioned wanting to do a swap like this, and @Protagonist said he has a white one that he thinks would look good with a maple neck. Eventually, we got together and traded necks. Now we both have basses we like even more than before!

This forum is your opportunity. Or should I say, swapportunity? :smug: No? :rollno: I should not. :bored: OK. Got it.

Just wanted to mention for Aiden's question that the neck pocket is pretty tight. We both had to adjust after the first time we put the necks on. I used a slide clamp to hold the neck in place while I tightened it. It would sit down fine but when the screws were tightened it would seperate a bit and there would be a gap.

Man that is cool but, I'm wondering if you would be so kind as to lay the white pickguard back over the tort and take a quick picture. After reading about you all swapping necks, I was really looking forward to seeing the all white vibe. Pretty please?
Sorry this took me a while to remember to do this! Here you go. I might have to try a black pickguard. All white isn't for me though.

So far as tuners, I'm also thinking of the new Ratio tuners from Graphtech.
RATIO MACHINE HEADS - Bass

They really speak to my inner nerd.

And my inner engineer likes the lowest weight tuners on the market, the Res-O-Lites by Gotoh. They have been fantastic on my Yamaha.
RES-O-LITE Series アーカイブ - G-GOTOH

And for really compact, the Sperzel tuners ended up replacing the Hipshot ultralights on my short scale Mouse bass.

Not casting shade at Hipshot, they make fine products. But I just see them everywhere and I'd like a bit more variety to be out in the world. I mean, to each their own, but these are where my interests currently lie.

Now back to playing! :woot:
Hey, thanks for sharing! Sorry I'm still quite new to bass...any chance you have tried any of these on the short scale stingray? And if you have any information on whether them are drop in replacement or not? Thanks in advance!

I certainly agree that your tort pickguard looks fantastic on there, but I'm seeing the beauty of an all white bass with a maple fretboard.

I tell ya, for my aesthetic sense, we both got better looking basses than the factory put out!
:roflmao:

Ah, no I have not put the Ratio tuners on anything at all yet. I have used the Res-o-Lite tuners on my Yamaha, and they went in with no modifications. You can check out that thread here:Repair of Shipping Damage to Yamaha Motion B "Jade"

So coming back to the noise, what is is the consensus around here?
Are the pickup noisy or not? specially on the middle position?
I would say it shouldn’t be noisy and with all the issues you have I would return it. I thought about buying used online but with not being able to see or play it I decided not to. I also didn’t want to deal with shipping back if it was not to my liking. So I decided to just buy new.

Mine's dead quiet too. Even with the boost and series engaged it isn't noisy
