I have an obsession for wood. The musical kind.
Had two pleasant occurrences happen yesterday at our show. The first guy said that he plays worship music every week with our drummer, and that he's never heard a live tone as articulate as my Studio 5. The second guy loved my playing (not trying to brag), because he said the tone complimented my style that much more. He then said he's friends with Chuck Panazzo (noted Styx bassist), and that he was sending him vids of my playing. This was all from the bass that I scored on GC's used site for $550. Granted, I run the preamp flat (2-3 pedals for eq), but the EMG HZ pickups do their job...just crank the output level.

My turn to join the Schecter Owner's Club with an Almost New Bass Day:
This Schecter Sessions Riot-4 seen at my local GC looked well-cared for and was wanting a new home. Took it home for $480 (they're $800 new these days), cleaned it up, buffed and polished it, and restrung with premium flat wounds (through body). Very minimal setup tweaking needed. The pic doesn't really do it justice, as the grain is just about to die for, IMHO. The three-band 18v preamp works very well, which along with a better-than-usual blend control gives quite a range of sound. The only con is the output is a bit lower than the other basses I'm playing through the same amp. Easy to deal with.
One quirk (not really a con): the truss rod tensioning bolt sticks out of the neck farther than any other guitar I've owned:
No big deal; it functions. I just had to cut down one of my many hex wrenches to fit:
A small price to pay for a great guitar aquired at a good price. Looking forward to getting in some play time.

I would personally recommend (as you also have probably seen many of in this thread) a Stiletto Studio. Yes, their msrp is 800(us)+, but you can find very nice used ones frequently on Guitar Center's website or reverb for ~500 ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed], granted not a great one because it lacks pictures and sorry to anyone clicking the link in the future to a sold bass). Easily my most played bass out of of the 10+ I own.
Not too thrilled about purchasing second hand and would rather have brand new? Pickings get a bit more slim there, but I would probably recommend an Omen Elite, one of the basses on my short list of finding a good deal on from being blown away from it trying one at my local GC. They currently have a sale on the blue burst one on their website for 550 (found here, once again apologies to future TBers who stumbled upon this post for dead link).
Either way, I have yet to play a Schecter that I didn't enjoy playing or didn't sound amazing, but that's just my 2 cents.
My Schecter P4 Exotic and J4, absolutely love these bases. I originally only got the J4 as a backup but it's quickly become my favourite bass, it's the perfect tone for my current project
Update on my Schecter output level: I had strung it with some new Rotosound flatwounds because GD didn't have my favorite strings in stock, and I hadn't tried this brand yet anyway. I didn't particularly like them, and so when I discovered I had a set of unopened D'Addario Chromes at home, I swapped them onto the bass instead, and the output was much improved. Interesting, no?
Another update: I can get the action lower on this bass without string buzz than any other bass I own. They're at 5/64 (and could probably go a tad lower when the setup settles down), and 6/64 is usually about the lowest I can get with my typical 45-105 flatwounds.

I love mine. They're my workhorses, and have also done some recording with them straight to the board. They sound and play phenomenally for the price.

Man, the day Schecter offers that P4 Exotic in lefty I'm splurging.
Such a great looking and sounding bass.
I just have to decide on a 5 stringer first
The J is passive, the P is active (note the EMG pick-ups).
I actually swapped the EMGs for DiMarzio Model P pickups and popped a stellartone b10 tone knob in.
The stock EMGs looked excellent and sounded pretty good but ridiculously hot and just couldn't quite get the sound I wanted.
The bass plays and feels great.
Welp, I’m about to join the club for the first time in about a decade. In my teens, I had a stiletto custom 4, but at the time I knew very little about what kind of setups I liked, so I only remember it being a so-so instrument, despite my nostalgia for it. Cut to this morning, and I see a stiletto elite 4 on Gc for 199.99. Listed as fair, but the guy I called said it was in pretty good shape apart from the gold hardware being not so gold anymore. It’s one of the older models with the big spikey “diamond series” logos, are these any notably better or worse than the later models?
