so are low mids now the in thing again at tb? last time i checked, everyone jumped off of eden because of the low mid hump and went to boutique cabs. now we're jumping on another low mid ship again? :D

Yeah there was a big craze for the "flat to 30Hz" cabs at one stage. I can see why some players should use them, but I never liked them. Too easy to bury.

Lets face it, we're gigging musicians who play better when we can hear ourselves. You can get all PC and proclaim that certain cab brands don't produce a "flat frequency response", or you can go for a cab that cuts through. I like a little low mids live, always have and always will.....

You can trust me when I state that the Schroeders sound different to Eden cabinets. Has nothing to do with low mid humps :)

Good Heavens no! Nononono! Nothing like an Eden. (Not that there's anything wrong with that! :p )

No humps. It's more like the mids are present, instead of scooped out like a lot of cabs. This is what makes it seem less bass heavy at really low volumes. It's the Fletcher-Munson curve in action. It's the reason why they invented "loudness" switches for stereos. And frankly, I'd rather hit the "loudness" switch on my amp for low volumes, than have that curve built into the cab which would make it sound tubby at performance volumes.

Well, yeah. I like the "flat to 30 hz" cabs, but I find that I like them ony when I EQ them a certain way. And if I'm always going to use a certain EQ, I might as well use a cab that doesn't require that EQ be used.

Not to imply that the Schroeders sound "colored", just that I can get my sound with less EQ than other cabs when I'm at stage volumes.

if you have to eq it a certain way do you really like that cabs sound?

and from all the descriptions here so far, the schroeders sound like they are a colored cab. not that that's bad since most cabs are imo. i just find it funny that whenever a new cab comes out, someone claims "finally, a new cab that lets the true sound of my bass shine through". when eden was big, they were transparent. when epifani and bergs came out they were flat and didnt color your tone. after a few years it turns out edens have a low mid hump. epis have a low mid hump to a lesser degree. bergs have a high end coloration etc. what will the consensus be on these cabs when people get over the flavor of the month syndrome?

The twist with the Schroeders is the design/size/weight. That makes them something different, IMO, than a new colour - or preceived lack thereof - as flavour of the month. More like big(ger) sound in smal(ler) packages is the flavour here, which has been all the rage for at least a couple of years, if not decades, in the amps/cab arena.

I'm guessing that's your interest here too? Given that on your live CDs I listen to there's nothing lacking whatsoever in great tone. :bassist:
the man's in california..............im in california..........you do the math ;) :D

like most here im interested in any and all new gear. but, to what i was saying earlier a lot of these cabs dont sound that different to my ears when others here on tb describe a night and day difference. the maker that to me has a very distinctive and different voice is bergantino. those cabs have more of the upper midrange that many cabs lack. but, when comparing epifani/eden/aguilar it comes down to hair splitting. i still havent tried an accugroove though.

when i side by side compared my current epifani 410 and my old eden 410xlt, the eden was a little more aggressive in the low mids and a little more efficient. i prefered the epifani sound marginally more than the eden. but, i could have been equally happy with either.

I guess I didn't explain myself well enough: The Fletcher-Munson curve has the effect of (among other things) making the low frequencies and ultra high frequencies sound subdued in comparison to the midrange, when listening at low volumes. This is for all speaker cabinets, including home stereos. That's why most home stereos have a "loudness" control, whose purpose is to simulate a full frequency response at low volumes by boosting the lows and the highs so that the sound isn't overly mid-rangey.

I use EQ in the same way as a "loudness" control to give me the sound that I want when I'm playing very very quietly, for example in my livingroom. However the true test of anything is how it works "on the job", and as I said before in my earlier post:

Once you turn the amp up and/or get the cab into a bigger room, the need to use EQ to get those results with the 1210 dissapears and it sounds fantastic running flat [emphasis added later]

and in my later post

Not to imply that the Schroeders sound "colored", just that I can get my sound with less EQ than other cabs when I'm at stage volumes.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

Narud brings up a very good point though: my bass isn't "flat", it has peaks and resonances that I like, that's why I play it and not a keyboard set to make sine waves. Everything from the strings on the bass to the cones in the cab is there to help me get the sounds that I want. If doesn't do that, then who cares whether it's flat or not?

Hmmm, a Low B-2 with a Schroeder 1210? I already have 2 1210's and one Low B-2... I haven't tried them together yet, but perhaps I should. Last night I gave the 1210s a go with recorded music. I used the following:

Afroman - Crazy Rap
Beastie Boys - Ch Check it Out
Beastie Boys - Intergalactic
Beastie Boys - Paul Revere
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Run DMC - Tricky
The Ericman197 Special - Test Tones

It was pretty cool for me because I had never actually heard the Schroeders at a distance. For bass, I don't really like tweeters that much. The one Jorg uses is probably better than most, but I've never been a huge fan of tweeters. What I can say is that it projects very well with very little wattage. Both of the cabs together were loud when hitting the -30dB light and were surprisingly clear at the other side of the house, behind them, above them, in the kitchen, upstairs, downstairs, standing on my head, etc. However, the efficiency was a major factor; I couldn't crank even one cab loud enough to get the speakers moving without things getting too loud, so I used a bass boost on the CD player.

With my Acme, sub lows were never a problem, but I'd also have to drive it with a lot of power to get it to decent listening levels. For fun, I put on ear plugs, cut out all the mids/treble and boosted the bass all the way. I hit the -10dB light on my poweramp a few times, but the resulting sub bass produced by the 1210s on Run DMC - Tricky was chest poundingly good. I was running them on one side of a QSC PLX 1202; 600 watts at clipping, 60 watts at -10dB, 6 watts at -20dB, and .6 watts at signal ( or -30dB ). Combining Schroeders with Acmes might be an interesting experiment. The 1210s are in no way lacking in lowend, but I wouldn't mind a boost in the 30 to 50Hz region. Of course, cabs that are plentiful in sublows are either gigantic or inefficient, and I can't have that :(

For Eden vs. Schroeder, I definetely prefer the Schroeders. Soundwise, the 1210s are in no way clean, but they're less colored than the Eden. I don't hate the sound of my Edens, but they produce a more clanky top end. In terms of lowend, I've yet to A/B them, but I feel that the Schroeders have a much better weight to efficiency to lowend ratio. I can't lift 2 100lb. 4x10"s, but I can lift 2 50lb. 1210's, so the Edens are out of the question.

You don't like tweeters? Does that mean that you turn them off when using cabs that have the capability to do that? I usually leave the tweets about mid way on the 1210 and the mids and tweets all the way up on my Low B-2, but I sometimes roll off the highs on my bass or on the amp

seems like these cabs have a good full sound, small size, decent weight, go low enough, and are pretty efficient.

sounds kinda like my eden xst 210.

so i'm wondering if anyone can say a few words in terms of the difference between the 2? just out of genuine curiosity. i'm guessing that obviously the highs are better (which is good but not enough to justify a cab change) and the 12" driver will have its own sound, but i'm wondering if there's a huge difference in terms of sound enough to make it sound different in the mix. if anyone has ahd teh priviledge of hearing both of course (:

OK...so I have read this whole thread...twice...and I don't think I have seen this yet so I'll ask here and in a separate thread...has anyone compared the Schroeders to a Bergantino HT112/EX112 stack? or a pair of HT112s or a single HT112? I have a pretty good idea of the answer based on the posts so far but I am curious....and starting to, dare I say it, GAS a bit!

Thanks,

T

No "So Whatcha Want"? That's a masterpiece! And great Run DMC pick, btw. Afroman is from Palmdale, that is almost unbelievable to me.

Anyway, when I heard the Schroeders, I didn't have a chance to A/B it with the cab I was currently using nor did I compare it to another cab at that moment. But from a less-experienced, raw perspective, I found the 1210 dug very deep and wide, and had similar enough to me volume outputs, at the very least on par with the types of sounds I heard from my former Avatar 410. That's pretty good considering two less drivers and being much, much smaller and lighter. To me, and my relatively primitive bass playing status, that was a winner. Proof: I sold my Avatar 410. Not saying the Avatar is bad...if anything, they are pretty awesome! Just that I'm ready to move on to a different sound, something much lighter and portable, and a bit more efficient.

I can't wait to have it and use it at a show! :hyper:

The Schroder cabs are interesting to me, but I'm reading conflicting reports. Talk about being confused! Here's what I'm looking for:
1. 4-10", I like the quickness of 10's, always will.
2. Sounds loud from 3 to 15 feet away, but does'nt wipe out the audience. 'Soundman friendly'
3. Does'nt need 1500 watts to work efficiently. I'm using 700 watts per channel @ 4 ohms, I hope that's enough power to drive this 'mystery cab'!
4. Can handle my Roscoe's B-string easily.

Most importantly, Tone:
1. Has great midrange response, a 4-10" cab that can really cut through, one I can easily hear.
2. Has a nice round low end, but not too boomy.
3. Has smooth but defined highs.
4. Stays clean at high volumes, but a little grind is acceptable.
5. Weighs less than 100 lbs.

Can a Schroeder (or any other brand) 4-10" cab do this?

Thanks- Art.

I think we're at the point in this 28 page thread that we've ventured beyond the actual effectiveness of the Schroeders and collided with personal tastes and opinions. Everyones' "perception" is different.

I am extremely happy with my 1210. I'd be willing to bet a gentleman's wager that you'd like the Schroeder 410 as well. Jorg has a return policy. For me at the time was $50.00 restock fee. I suggest you buy a 410, try it for a few days. If you don't like it send it back. I seriously doubt it will go back.

I appreciate the feedback, Joey. I'm definitely going to give one a shot. I've looked at the website and I'm intrigued.
How many watts are you running into your cab? How's the volume? The reason I ask this is to find out their efficiency. The sensitivity rating looks really good.

Thanks again, -Art

How about 9 out of 9 (IMO)?

The Schroeder 410 can do it and put a really big smile on your face at the same time.

I wanted a few songs in short order, so I had to leave a few out :( I used to be your typical self righteous rocker, but I'm starting to get into some rap, and I must say... I'm liking it. Rock has no instrumentation... I've gotten to the point where I've heard almost every possible guitar solo, root bass line, and not-so-impressive falsetto.

Arthur: I too think you'll like the 410. Personally, I'd prefer a 21012 though. The way I see it, the 21012 is lighter, louder, and deeper, but hey, different strokes for different folks. I went with 2 1210s myself for even more depth and transportability, but I suppose some guys would go with 2 1212s to get even more depth. At this point it seems that everyone who has bought a Schroeder has really liked it, so if you're at all nervous about keeping it or sending it back, I'm sure you could find 5 people willing to buy it off you. I had to wait a few weeks to get mine... the supply is small and the demand is increasing rapidly.

Scooperman: Ehhh, I don't love the tweeters, but they're great for what they are. I really liked the upper midrange and treble sounds I got out of my Acme, but then again I don't want to go for an entirely hi-fi rig either. I think the current tweeters give a good compromise between output and sound quality. I've only had the cabs for a very short time, but what I generally do is use just a bit less treble than I normally would with an Acme type setup. These tweeters seem to be a bit more efficient than those which were on my Edens, which also didn't require a highend rolloff ( but didn't sound quite as good as I recall ). I'm still getting used to them... my main priority was to get a rig that was deep, loud, and transportable. That's what I received and I'm very happy about that. The next step is to get my tone exactly how I like it, which is important, but isn't my priority per se.

I've run my 1210 with a Sunn Sceptre (pair of 6550 power tubes) and felt good about the tone and volume for acoustic jamming. I rehearsed electric sans drums but loudly with 200 watts of SS Ashdown and wasn't crazy about the tone, but the volume was plenty.

FYI: I also dislike tweeters and have *always* bought cabinets without. Turning off the horn is NOT the same as not having one. I like the high end as it comes out of a regular old voice coil. That said, I really dig the tweeter in my Schroeder, I actually keep it about 1/2 way up.

Yeah, that's a neat trick that the Schroeders pull off: plenty of clear transparent hgh-end without making you ever feel that your head is being sliced off by the treble. "Smooth" is a word that springs to mind...
