Source Audio Sourcerers Society (S.A.S.S.) Pt 2

Hopefully this is the place to ask, has anyone compared the IE polytope to the orbital modulator?? I know the orbital has more sounds in it but what the polytope does is GREAT, I'm just curious if anyone has compared. Thanks!

You can't use the Orbital for static detune like you can on the Polytope, but you can approximate similar chorus sounds.

Mostly I'd say they are different tools.
 
I'm a phaser guy love em.. so those of you who have the Orbital and the Mantra are those phasers comparable? Is the Orbital more geared for flanger and chorus modulations.. since I like my phasers more on the "funkier" side of things maybe the Mantra is more my speed for my Phaser fix? What say you Sourcerers..

you've done your research. Everything you said is true.

edit: sorry i don't have examples of other funky phasers to compare it to.....but....you have that cool mod source dial. get a little envelop/LFO phaser-action-thing. Now the Orbital has this dial too, but Manta is more 'funky' for sure.
 
My new Mantra arrived today. I've been really enjoying exploring all of the different options. I like that it has some distortion a built in, but I will mainly use it as a more traditional envelope filter. The thing that I really like is the very wide range that each parameter has available to be adjusted, like a really good VST. So far, I've had a lot of awesomeness from running it with an IE Subterranea. Very fat sound. Overall, I can't find anything I don't like about this filter. I could go for a few more presets, just because there are soooo many sounds to be found.

And the phasers are funky! Funky like the ep2 I used to have.

I'm gonna do a shoutout with a Xerograph Deluxe, 3 Leaf Proton, and the Manta. I can already say the Manta will win the versatility category by a looong shot!

Could you use only the drive effects on the manta?

Going off memory here.

There is no specific bypass on the filter, so the drive will always have to pass through a filter. However, you can more or less find ways to make the filter have as little impact on the tone as possible by doing the following:

* Set depth to 12 O'clock noon (no filter movement)
* Set resonance to minimum
* Set frequency to maximum
* Cycle through the filter voices until you hear one that seems to impart as little audible effect as possible (probably #2)

If the filter is still audible just go with it and use the filter as an EQ. Try setting a really fast square LFO with low depth on the filter for fun effects.

Here's a couple of experimental drive voices I created with the Manta.

There's also a high pass filter #24 that you might be able to use by setting the frequency to it's lowest, I cannot recall how low it can go and if it'll be cutting off some of the sub-lows or if it goes outside of the audible range or not.
 
So here is the pic of my core setup as I'll be running for the foreseeable future.

I want to keep this all on a PT Jr. I had a setup on a PT2, but its just bigger than I want to gig with. The three pedals I absolutely need are the Octaver (pedal with the Penguins on it), OFD and the Orbital. I can get away without the Manta (or other filter), but would rather not. I was playing with a setup where I added the Dimension Reverb (a pedal which I love but have little use for with my band) and a Line6 M5 which was being used as a midi controller and for its great pitch shifting abilities on a PTJR, but there was no way to keep the expression pedal on board. The entire thing is powered off a Voodoolabs Pedalpower 4x4. The 4 400ma outputs are plenty for each SB2 to have its own tap. The 4th one is actually running off the 12v tap to the Octaver which gains a little headroom with the extra 3v. It's really a great match for what I am running.

The bypass looper is really key to making it work for me and keeping it on this size of a board. I often use just a drive sound of some sort for the majority of a song and like to bring in modulation for a bridge or chorus. Instead of setting up two scenes, one with modulation and one without and switch between them, its much easier for me to just bypass the Orbital via the looper and bring it in when needed. With a more advanced midi controller you could emulate this in software, but it would be impossible to keep it on a PT Jr.

If I really wanted to add a nother SB2 pedal (remember, the hub can work with 5 at a time), then I could fit it on there by removing the tuner and getting a smaller Octaver, but at the moment, this is the most economical use of space for me.

Only thing bugging me right now is the midi cable itself. The right angle cable seems like a great idea, but for some reason the midi connector on the controller is upside down, so the cable faces up instead of down. I have to use a straight connector, but it means I have to take out the cable when putting the board in its case. Need to open up the midi controller and figure out if I can turn the connector around.

Just had a quick chance to plug my Sub Phatty into my pedalboard, since putting the Manta on there. I'm sure you guys can figure out what happened from there.

It seems like the manta's envelope responds very similarly no matter the signal it is hit with. It seems to behave the same with passive with passive and active basses and even with some of the heavier patches on the Moog. There is still a good deal of control using playing dynamics but the overall shape remains the same. I wonder if this is intentional, or specific to my style and set up.

Analog effect circuits are often held up as being special. We take great care in preserving the good aspects of those circuits in our digital implementations. In Manta, hope you all don't mind that we chose not to emulate the sometimes inconsistent performance of analog envelope follower circuits when used with different input sources.

Like running a heavy compressor before it?

I would keep in mind that an envelope filter becomes more dynamic when it gets an input signal that is more dynamic. A compressor will (by definition) reduce the dynamic range of the input signal. With that said, the Manta envelope circuit was tested with compressed signals during the design phase and should perform very well in this application.
