Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread 29: "Please Huff Responsibly"

I freaking love this guitar:

What kind of guitar is this? Looks like a gibby sg but I`m guessing it`s not?
My recently purchased Epi Thunderbird also has a few intonation issues. I really hate the bridge on that thing. If I do end up modding it, I'll probably rout the neck pocket and go Squierbird on it.
I`ve got a "limited edition" silverburst/chrome Epi thunderbird that I enjoy way more than I ever would have thought considering the price of it. I`d like to put a jazz neck on it and make it a fenderbird someday.

I prefer the 27" scale fenders w/ humbuckers personally... but I think it's mainly due to the tone, you can't make a strat sound as thick and heavy as a LP. Totally different beasts, bolt on vs. set neck, floating bridge vs. fixed bridge, thin vs. thick body thickness, etc etc

My guitarist/friend uses a Tele for all his heavy music needs and he gets killer tones out of it.

Not doom but "Until The Light Takes Us" (believe that's what it's called) about the crazy black metal guys that kill eachother in Norway or whatever. Entertaining enough.

I thought that was a pretty interesting documentary.

Thanks to whoever posted that Omega Massif link. Real good stuff.

Man Askrere, you just triggered some bad memories haha. When I was at Penn State me and a few buddies took a bus from State College that went straight into China Town, NYC. We were going to catch the first Summer Slaughter ever at BB Kings. Driver spoke zero English, got lost, and at one point was going a solid 85 mph through the Holland Tunnel, changing lanes like he was on the last lap of the Daytona 500. My one friend has anxiety issues and I thought he was going to pass out from a panic attack.

I prefer the tobacco sunburst with P-90s look, personally. I like the old Deluxe LP models with the mini humbuckers too. I've played/heard (though not owned) a few 70s LPs and Firebirds with mini humbuckers over the years and really liked the sound.

id get my ass tanned, I bought my 2006ish LP Standard + for 2400 or so and **** i cant be seen with another LP or id get my balls cutoff. Its sort of a thing were you just gotta wait to find the right older one, with the right kind of neck and play.

Id prefer it black or in some burst like my LP now

"Agree to disagree"?!! - This is the internet, damnit! Where are the personal attacks?

I'm not gonna personal attack the man who built me the amp of my dreams and is currently in the process of designing and building a pedal for me, it's bad form. ;)

What are your guys tips on "Evil-ing" up a song? We got a tune that's happier than we want but we love the riff.

Minor keys? (D Minor is the saddest of all keys)

Evil harmonies?

Slow it down?

Double bass?

More fuzz (is that even possible)?

Do u have a way to record your jams? Try all of the above and combos of whats above and listen back and see what fits the song best. I'm adamant about trying things out even if they seem in your head like they will result in poop, sometimes your mind can deceive you. And recording them allows you to filter the info.

Looks like Keko, the drummer from Weedeater, just quit the band. Some kind of dust-up with Dixie, according to Keko's FB page.

Well I'm finally done with weedeater. Dixie pushed me to far this time & I will never forgive him. I think its faith though. I have some bigger plans coming up. I'm not giving up drums. I'll be back on the road real soon.tba

Must have been some ****ed up **** for him to quit in the middle of a tour like that. Those guys always seemed like family.

Again? Didn't Sherm quit a few years ago after fist fighting with dixie while on a coke binge?

Tele's aint nothing to f*ck with, I love their tone, they just don't sit right on me, making them extremely uncomfortable, I gotta have something with an upper horn and a tummy cut, or something with no horn at all like a V.

Minor thirds and flatted fifths are handy. I like to throw in the minor third of the flatted fifth for a full 1.5 step scale run (so, in E: E-G-Bb-Db).

If you're not actually in a minor key, throw in some chromatic runs that include minor key notes anyways. Create some tension between chord changes with those notes, even if you're just moving between a root and a fifth.

If I actually played my LP I think I would get some nickel hardware for it. Speaking of gold looks tacky.

Aged gold hardware looks better then chrome IMO. But as far as fresh looking hardware, yeah chrome definitely beats out gold.

Yeah, no joke. Those guys always seemed like brothers. But who knows. Dixie is a little unpredictable. Keko seemed like the glue, to me.

Appearances can be deceiving.... They've had internal issues for years now from what i've heard, and it's not just dixie, it's all of them.

It was the song I posted a few pages back. The main riff is too bouncy (I swear I didn't write it) and any attempts to "evil" it up just complicate things. I'm thinking we'll need to add some slick harmonies to make everyone happy. I just wondered what all y'alls go to tricks were.
