Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I've thought for quite some time, and brought it up here before: one way to take a stand is just to drop guitars altogether.

I dig guitars, and play guitar. I've played guitar in many bands and, as a bass player, have worked with a lot of great, very cool guitarists.

But really, even in doom or any other genre, guitars aren't "required." There have been a few bass/drum duos. A two-bass and drums lineup would be pretty cool. Or bass-keys/synth-drums. There are all kinds of guitar-less options, and I'd like to see more of this kind of thing.

Many years ago I was messing around with a couple of friends and we recorded a few tracks just for sh!ts'n'grins of bass, drums and a trumpet which was mic'ed and the mic was run through some pedals. It sounded fargin' m-a-s-s-i-v-e. We thought it sounded so great we intended to pursue it as a project, but we were all already in more than one band and had commitments and it never got off the ground.

Thanks for this info/rundown of your experience. I haven't sought any kava out, but I am going to try to track some down. need to try this.

Kava by Rex has the best prices I have found so far but also great reviews so I started there.

That is the best answer you can really get. An amp driven in to distortion puts out way more than it is rated for, and that turns in to heat in a power soak. All it takes is a failure due to being heated up, for the amp to be toast.

IMHO if you are looking at getting power tube break up, you either need smaller amps, or higher volumes.

I definitely agree with you. If I were to get one it wouldn't be for tube break up. I would literally use it to put my amp on 3 or 4 and knock the volume down to apartment levels. I like my Sunns tone a whole lot, but at the lower volume threshold it is pretty loud in my little 1BR. It usually is not a problem because I play when everyone is at work, which is why I haven't pursued the idea further. I am getting new neighbors below me soon and if they had an infant, I may not be able to play my amp much at all, so an attenuator would come in handy. But **** that for now, I gots bills to pay and 15s to play.

I really need to try and grab a used mb800 as a backup. I am super intrigued by the drive controls. I haven't seen anything other than the 250s at the Crestwood store and Bridgeton is a bit of a drive. My drummer works at the Bridgeton store and he is a gear nerd, but more focused on PA, DJ, guitar and drum gear. He is pretty bass stupid though. I actually had never been to the Bridgeton store until like 6 months ago. I was a little shocked to see FCS, Gibson and a Ric on the wall. Crestwood has nothing but low end gear. Last time I was in they had one MIA Fender Jazz. It was the only american made bass in the store.

You KNOW I'm already executing this plan :)

Noise-A-Tron from Seattle is just bass and keys. They have a very cool sound although I admit they were a bit too drone-y to hold my interest for a full set.

There's also a couple bands out there where the bassists outnumber the guitarists. Look up Sorxe (here in AZ) and Demonaut (from Atlanta).
(..although Joel from Demonaut has blasphemed the low-end faith and now plays guitar in Sourvein... )

I'm looking forward to a show I'm joining in July where Hex Volt will play with Sorxe and pals TwinGiant (standard bass + twin guitars) to open for Atala (power trio).... do the math- for the night as a whole, the basses outnumber the guitars :)

I need to check out the Bridgeton one again, I visited lat year as I was getting my bearings and it was a much better experience. I live 5 minutes from Crestwood, and it has just been steadily getting worse. But I also have to realize, I have esoteric gear tastes, so outside of a small boo-teek shop, I am rarey going to be GAS struck by production stuff.

Except the new Ibanez SR655. Thats a sweet ride.

Show went great last night!!! Brought full PVYHenge...holy hell is that a lot of stuff to move, while its awesome, dont know I wanna lug it all out every show. Might see if I can downsize a bit, like lose one cab and amp. 2 heads and 3 cabs should be plenty, preliminary thought is mace through 218 and Musician through the folded 18 and an 810. Also I really need to put wheels on my 810...
