Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

If I replace the pickups in my guitar, should I also replace the pots? I've read places where they say certain pickups need certain pots. I'm just getting generic passive humbuckers, so should I also pick up a few pots at the same time?

You don't need to re do everything unless you want. Your guitars already got humbuckers, so it already has appropriate pots.

If you want 500k audio/alpha/A pots are the ones you want. I just can't believe everything failed in this guitar. If nothing works and no sound, the switch might be busted or the output.

You'd think if it all failed it would look like it had been flooded or burned.

I know. That's what I've thought. The switch appears to function, as far as we've traced continuity from it to the output. Oddly enough, it's got 2 B500K pots, and only 1 A500K pot. Also, I can't find a wiring diagram for my exact setup. Any help would be appreciated. I've got two humbuckers, 3 way switch (Les Paul style if it matters), and 3 knobs ( volume, volume, tone).

And @askrere , when you say output, do you mean the physical jack? I replaced that already, since it was completely missing when I bought it. Yes, I've checked to make sure ground/hot are correctly wired. Nothing seems to make sense, hence tending towards a professional looking at it.

So yesterday I said screw it and told work to sod off. Hopped in the Caymen with my dad and drove to Detroit. White castle for lunch, Huber and Breese for some rare gear shopping, afternoon out on a friend of my dads boat for beers and fishing, peel and eat shrimp at the marina. Not a bad way to take a day off.

At H&B they had an amazing selection of gear, the new Orange amps, Aguilar, Mesa tube amps, a bunch of non sh!tty basses. I was excited to play the Ibanez fanned fret bass they had. It is a really nice bass. Neck feels great, finish is superb, playability is decent, short scale (35") with a mild fret fanning.

Just couldnt get the bartolini's and the active pre amp to sound like anything I would use. So even though the Ibby is a little less price wise than a combustion, the savings would be scrapped as I would have to replace all the electronics. Now if they cam out with an affordable 4 stringer....

Look up audio (A) vs logarithmic (B) pots for real explanation. Basically audio is consistent rise as you turn it up 1-2-3-4... Logarithmic has a jump 1-2 8-10.

I prefer all audio, and I had no idea what yours had so just said all A.

Just google two humbucker vvt with switch wiring. There's a website I can see in my head I know will show up that has that and like 30 others diagrams and suggestions.

Output = jack or wires mean to go to jack yea. Dunno what the issue could be without seeing a pic or being there. I'd just be yammering through a list of random maybes.

I'm about at the random maybe section myself. Just trying to fix/diagnose the cheap things first that I can do on my own, before taking it to a pro. Next, I might try to replace the switch. Seems like the next easiest thing, then pickups, and by that point I'd have replaced everything buy pots!

On a buyer note. If anyone here ever decides to buy or has bought a fender hotrod deluxe or deville before the series III they used to have logarithmic pots on the volume as an in store sales ploy.

Basically you turn it down. Then turn it on and up to taste 1-2-8...! Whoa it gets loud fast it's only on "3-4". Then you buy and get home and crank it and it still sounds it did at 4

You spent $25 on the guitar, don't take it to a pro. Take it slow, rewire it entirely if you have to, learn with it.

Happy Friday fellers.

Julian, sounds like an awesome day with the pops!

Possible songwriting session tonight, guitarists have 3 new songs ready to go, possible singer may also be showing up.

After that probably stopping off at the Wisco for the Galactic Hatchet, Cold Black River, Emerald Douglas (former bandmates) show. Still weirdness between the old guitarist and I. Tried to bury the hatchet at UFOMAMMUT but dude wasn't having it. Oh well. :rollno:

My friends that rode to the UFO show with me were wondering why he was being so stand-offish toward them. I explained the situation and they're like "Yeah, we know he's got a beef with you, but why is he being so cold to us?"

Guilt by association I guess. Which is sad because Jim and Brian are literally some of the nicest people I've ever met, they have an awesome stoner rock band that gets good shows. They were wanting to put something together with E.D., which I encouraged. Probably not going to happen now. Sucks for E.D.

Anway, enough drama for a Friday. Wino and Conny Ochs in the headphones, don't know why I slept on getting their albums for so long, sh*t rules.

Glad you had a Stellar Day, you definitely deserve it!

Last night was a good night. Fourth day in a row with no chronic daily headache, not sure if it is from kicking the anti-seizure medicine, my new script of singulair, daily use of the kava kava, or the mild weather? And I finally broke through the reverse tolerance of the kava kava last night and was pretty krunked! So euphoric and relaxing, now I know where that Pacific Islander ear to ear grin comes from! I celebrated by watching classic Doctor Who and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and nodded off to Grails in bed! I think the classic Doctor Who theme song is just pure awesome and have since being a little kid! I want to be a in Space Rock band that covers it!

I need to get a new amp for the tv. I don't run surround, I want to run my vintage Polks and an Infinity sub I have. Is there something newer that would take an mp3 player and still work with the outdated setup I have or should I just get another old amp from a pawn shop?

Also this may be my favorite pedal review ever and there isn't even an instrument plugged into it.
