Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I'm trying to find some new stuff to listen to but it seems like all the Doom/Stoner bands I am coming across either have bass tones that are buried behind the guitar or under so much fuzz it is indistinguishable from a guitar.
Can someone drop me the names of some major bands that have cleanish, audible bass?

Some bands are led by their bass players, and some of the bass players play a strong songwriting role. In these bands you clearly hear the bass, regardless of whether the fuzz is on or off. Church of Misery and Rev Bizarre already mentioned by Aron.

I actually tried listening to that one just a little before I posted this. I had a lot of trouble making out the bass on that one as well.
I know there are some real challenges for bass players given the low tunings and heavy level of distortion involved. I think that it is somewhat ironic that so many bassists, myself included, like a genre that seems to intentionally tell bass players to get to the back of the bus.

if you can't hear the bass on Sky Valley then there has to be something wrong with whatever gear you are using to listen to music...the bass drives that album.

Linked this earlier as an example, but now I'm listening to it again and I have to say, while I find the bass tone a bit sterile, the playing is top-shaging-notch. He's driving the band and holding everything together, providing rhythm and melody, basically just tearing it the shag up. shaging impressive.

For anyone interested, this is a scratch take of some new MDT with Moog synth in place of bass guitar. Even though this is a "draft," I think it bodes well for Moog-as-bass. Sits pretty well in the mix and plays nicely with guitar and drum. Good first experiment at least.

As for the actual song, it's a leftover from the Styrofoam Tombstone EP that we decided to rework.

I had the Junior for a while till I kind of got wah wahed out and sold it. Worked great on both bass and guitar.

These guys only recorded an EP before they imploded. Kinda bummer, I love this kind of riffing.

This cracked me up. I listened to (more than) my share of DB back then, but I had almost completely forgotten about Cradle of Filth. They never grabbed me much.



I shudder when I think about some of the pretentious, mopey stuff I was into in a big way back in the 80s. Very little of it holds up well today and I look back and think at least I didn't wear eyeliner.

I talked your SB-2 up on the Basses forum last night. A guy was talking about how much he wanted one, was having trouble finding one in stock anywhere or something. I didn't link to your sale but just mentioned that there was a totally hot SB-2 in the classifieds right now at what was a killer deal.

Weeping Demon is THE wah as far as I'm concerned. Especially for bass, especially with the, ahem, "non-traditional" types of tones this group often goes for, all of the controls over the frequency range and Q and whatnot really come in handy. The construction is very solid. I personally feel it is the ultimate wah pedal and have no desire to find any other. This all said, mine did cease functioning mid-gig when some beer was spilled on it. Worked fine after drying out.

And speaking of black metal, there's not much stuff I really liked. There was just too much BS going on, not enough focus on music in the years I was interested in it.
Nowadays I only listen to Darktrone's last 3 albums, Satyricon's Rebel Extravaganza, Wolves in the Throne Room and not much else.
But I'm weird like that, I love My Dying Bride's The End Complete which pretty much every MDB fan hates.

Awesome! Tool is one of my favorites and I have never had the chance to see them. Primus is probably my favorite band, so this show is just an incredible opportunity. Hoping my lady and best bud/his lady will all be able to go.

Well, in all fairness, how many pedals WOULDN'T quit when you spill liquid all over them? Sounds pretty solid to me. Might have to go through with the deal.
