Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

depressing post warning: didn't get the full time digital photography professor job, they didn't even interview me, thinking about leaving LA to go back to Ohio and just buying into a condo or something, left my art gallery last week, because i didn't really see the point in working with people who couldn't sell anything and were always doing everything at the very last minute, all these wealthy folks who grew up out here keep telling me that things are gonna improve greatly, that's easy to say, but i'm getting older and the combination of working 11 hours a day(four days a week), playing music/writing music, making art, doing freelance, and maintaining the ranch is too much
*the weird thing is now that i'm finally getting better at bass, recording, and performing it seems like i'm destined to just be some dude who photographs bands and posts his pics on fb cause he's too exhausted to do much else
**on the positive side i have been building a collection of homoerotic michael myers photos as inspiration for my planned industrial horror dance band

You own a ranch in LA or is that a euphemism?

True but where you are physically can have a huge impact on your lifestyle.
Cost of living, work prospects:)sorry:) etc.
That's before you get to the social impact of your immediate peers.
Not to speak for @mpdd but LA has a huge risk/reward ratio for artistic employment. If the money isn't there for him he can only be so detached from "the where".

i think i'm there physically, but not mentally anymore, things out here have gotten so corporate and all the creative spaces seem to be run by or catering to investor type business people, i think i had a good 15 year run though for somebody who moved out here with 2k and a bunch of art supplies in the trunk of his compact car

Damn that is balls, aren't apartments like 2K in LA? I always think how the hell do people afford to live in California.

Well, I got to spend some time with the Bugera SVT clone today. I'll preface this to say that I didn't try it at high volumes or in a band context.

Is it loud? Yes.

Is it tubey? Yes.

Does it sound like an SVT? No. More like a simulation of an SVT. There is noticeable overdrive with the gain knob up, this overdrive is rather harsh sounding, leading me to believe that it's not entirely tube-based. My 2-pro is still really clean with the pre gain all the way up, the BVV gets much dirtier, but it just doesn't sound the same as the real deal. In a band mix, at high volume it probably sounds great, but it falls far short of the real deal IMO.

I guess all of that is to be expected, but I was expecting more out of this head for some reason. I'm toying with the idea of taking it home with me and bringing it to band practice so I could A/B it and the 2pro, but after today I don't think it's worth the effort lugging an extra 85lb head around just to arrive at the same conclusion.

Obviously it's not fair to put a $600 clone up against the $1800 2-pro, but it was much worse than I thought it would be.

So, if anyone is thinking about snagging one of the Bugeras, do yourself a favor, save up an extra couple hundred and get a used SVTCL. I was THIS close to getting one of the Bugeras before I got the SVT, I feel like I dodged a bullet.

Well, I pulled the trigger on a new mini tube head for recording guitar at home. Bought a Traynor DH15H, made an offer on a new one from a dealer on ebay and they accepted. Next up, trying to decide between getting a new 1x12 and a speaker or possible just buying two new different 12" speakers for my current 2x12 to get some variety. I have a set of older Celestion 65's in my 2x12 now and like them, but I was thinking maybe doing something like a Greenback and Vintage 30 (or similar equivalents from other brands) might be good for recording demos.

The Epi Thunderbird is treating me well, been playing around with it a lot. I really need a new band so I can crank it up with Mr. Grumpy through my 810, but no luck in that department lately.

Cool. I doubt you be disappointed with the traynor. I've been in and out of traynor/yourkville gear since the mid 90's and it's always been a great value brand.

Sitting at home and paying the bills(soooo much fun!). For some STUPID shagING reason, I get the urge to know what I've got left on my student loans.
Don't know if any of you have student loans but it ain't worth looking at. Just pay the damn monthly payment and keep your head down. Knowledge wields a terrible power over motivation. Was feeling pretty good this morning about stuff thinking I might be at the end of the doldrums.
Never mind.
Suppose I'll just go cut me a big shaging piece of Kahlua cake and try and forget. I don't want to know anymore.

Yeah, this is the third I've owned. All the demos and reviews point towards it being suited for how I want to use it, clean pedal platform with a little crunch on tap. In place of the mini Grumpy I wish I could have.

So I know a lot of us down tune, but I am toying with the idea of tuning one of my 5 strings E-C to kind of get in to that range more easily. It is also supposed to be sick/piano like with the long dingwall scale, and having played guitar through my JGR it should be amazing.

Anyone messed with going up?

Beyond the 7th fret tuned to C standard, excluding the octave, I don't comprende any notes of higher pitch.
