Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Digging the hotter output of the ATK KA500, carved a new brass nut for this and the 700. Seriously considering taking the TE GP12SMX and BE D10BX-D stack to the studio. The #1 preshape sounds so sweet solo, really curious if it translates in a band setting. Getting used to the landphil from Idiot Box, may turn into the primary fuzz.

Get a pro tech to do it for you I had a bone nut put on mine a couple years back and it made a subtle but noticeable difference in tone on open strings, it's almost always worth the $$$ investment to upgrade the bridge and nut to the best you can get after you've upgraded pups/preamp (unless your bass comes with nice stuff stock obviously).
For the guys talking about tuning and string gauge I find the fundamental is deeper with bigger strings and usually start with .135 for b and go up .005-.010 for each half step so b .135 c .130-125 c# .120-.115 d .115-.110 and for standard or down a half step ill go .110-.105. The original poster was talking about playing in Drop tuning so I'd probably go with one of the kalium string sets calibrated for drop C to get a more even tension then just a random set from a store.
I strung DR DDTs 55-115 up lately for C standard. They feel and sound great, but are definitely floppier than standard tuning.

Just finished recording bass for my band's new record. Not doom or stoner at all but I knew some of you guys might appreciate the setup.
The 105 Blue Steels weren't too bad last night in drop C. They were stable, though slightly floptastic. I think 110 would be the thickest I would probably go because I've been a lighter gauge guy for a while. I put the DDT 115's on my Travis Bean, I'm kinda underwhelmed, the 115 feels dead already, probably from my acid sweat death palms.

Now that is interesting, I dont believe I have ever heard anyone from either mentioned genre play in anything other than D or lower.

I guess that answers that. Are they genres more or less confined to lower tunings, as in can't have one without the other? At which point does it stop stoner dooming and start alt rocking (or whatever)? Forgive me if I sound trollish, I'm being genuine here. I have a friend who is a vocalist that kind of did a 360 from funk rock to stoner and listening to his stuff it seems just shy of sabbath territory if I were to try to describe its sonics. I've been trying to educate myself as to what exactly constitutes what and can't seem to find any reference to certain characteristics beyond having to listen to a bunch of stuff (or maybe going back to pg.1 of this thread?) that might not be either here nor there on the subject.
I suppose I'm asking for a summarization on what defines which.
How do your guitarists tune, or do you just play in positions to accomodate the structure at Std tuning?
Not only are Black Sabbath the godfathers of Metal but I also believe they are responsible for Doom as well since they incorporate the same characteristics. Tempo and tuning change everything.
They are also typically in standard, and on 7 strings. We have some songs that don't use the lower strings, but they aren't very doomy most of the time. There is a song or two one guitarist prefers to downtune for, and it's in Drop C I believe. I keep my tuning the same.
No, I bought it from the original owner, then he traded to get it back from me, I haven't had it in a few years. It stands out, though- funny to see it again!
Dustern initially started in standard tuning. Guitarist tunes to D standard now.
most of our stuff is Eb standard mostly because we both like the slightly lower tension. but then again we're not that doomy. We do also use C# standard but that's only to introduce some different keys to play in more than tone.
I don't think down tuning is essential. a good riff/song should sound good in any key, if it doesn't then it ain't that good.
I play a 5 string too.
Who knows? I make them tell me what chords they are playing. It took a minute, but I explained that they should know what they are playing and how to communicate that regardless of tuning.
In Catapult we do that as well, partly because often the guitarists aren't in the same tuning, and there are also keyboards.
Same with Dustern, as far as the keyboard.
