Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Guitarist is playing thru a Marshall super lead he’s borrowing from a friend with option to buy. It sounds incredible as you can imagine. Previously he was playing thru my V4. I was wondering if y’all have played that thru the 810 cab? I have the GK 700 RB and it takes pedals like a champ but do miss tubes. Very loud band just wondering if 100 watts will work.

I play a V4B though and 8x10 and it can get really loud. It is breaking up at that point so it’s not super clean but that is the point, right? It is able to keep up with my guitarists who are running Science heads into 4x12 cabs. I also had a GK 1001rb II which was running into whatever their nicest 8x10 they were making about 16 years ago was. Although a very nice rig, it was just always too clean for me. It wouldn’t break up until it was at deafening levels and everyone was upset. I would say we are a pretty loud band but not going for the doom full stacks rattle your bowels kind thing.

Yeah a clean tone is not sought here. Do you use dirt pedals? I run a muff into the b3k.

@lucas303 @instrumentalist cool to know that you guys are chess enthusiasts too lol. Gotta say that I've never seen that opening before either. Seems... Interesting.

Al is definitely one of my favorites too. His sense of rhythm and groove is just fascinating, he just does so much with so little (musically speaking, his rig is another story). I remember showing a buddy of mine the "Om" live at amoeba show and he said if he closed his eyes it sounded like there was more than just a bass player and a drummer. I definitely got the vibe that he's reclusive as well, not that that's a bad thing at all, I think it just makes him cooler. He's just a dude that looks like a wizard that emerges from the desert every so often to shred his axe and then falls back into obscurity only to repeat the cycle. Hardly any interviews, videoed or otherwise, says like one thing on stage every show, and writes killer lines and lyrics. Just an interesting dude to say the least.

I think that's one of few genres that are more stoner than stoner rock. Blessed Papa Al has even made some dub remixes of some Om material.

Al has said in interviews that his main bass influences outside of Geezer are reggae/dub cats like Aston Barrett, Robbie Shakespeare, George Fulwood, and Errol Holt.

You can really hear the dub influence in Om’s last couple albums, but Sleep’s newer stuff definitely has some roots reggae in it too. I’m especially thinking of the chill end jam in “The Botanist.”

I just realized Hilbish makes their Beta preamp in pedal form.

I think someone in the ambient effects thread has one. Ive heard great things, just massive footprint. I'm curious but not that curious. I think theres a similar one he does a la Red Fang that's some sorta sunn.
Footprint doesn't matter much to me. I don't run too many pedals on my board, so I have lots of space. I'd probably use it as a pre into the Quilter. Hmmmmmmm

Come to think of it, back when harmonica was my thing, I knew of a guy who lived on his own in a remote part of Scotland, in a small house, doing everything by himself, hardly even visiting any shops. Every once in a while he'd want to see some people, so he'd travel all the way to London and play harmonica in the Underground. (He was one of the 400 people in the world with a permit for playing in the London Underground.)

Talk about contrasts.
